FYI - This thread is a follow up to the .357 thread I started a few days ago. Based on my trip to the shop today I am most impressed by the 627 and the Ruger GP100 (I know it's not a Smith).

The shop I visited had about 5 different 627s. The only difference I could tell between them was that the grips were different. They were all listed for $799. I'm confused because when I look at S&W's website the 627 is listed at $1,400. I understand that there is usually a difference between MSRP and actual retail but this is such a huge difference that I'm wondering if I'm missing something important.

Lastly, the website indicates that the 627 is a performance center gun. What does this mean exactly. Are all the 627s worked over by their performance center gunsmiths or is this more of a marketing thing?

The ones you saw were probably Pro Series 627s which are a step above regular production and a step below the Performance Center. Likely had 4" barrels instead of 5" or 3" and have an MIM hammer and trigger.

It does sound like the pro series. Not the PC Center but still a fantastic gun.

I have a performance ctr 627.It will shoot better than I'll ever be able to shoot it.Using Magtech 158 gr accuracy from 25 yds up to 200 yds at a target is unreal.I like everything about it but the hammer, one of those big 629DX hammers sure would be nice.Sold all of my handguns but an old S&W 22 after I got it because it is 1400 before tax.
