I just acquired a Model K98 and is dated 1942. It appears to be real good shape and got it from a relative. They had it stored away in a closet. anyway i now have it and decided to reload for it. I have all the info for my reloads and just got my dies and winchester cartridges as well as sierra match 200Gr. I decided to get one of the brand new cartridges and just chamber it. No bullet. Well it went into the breach but i could not close the bolt even after pusing down on the magazine follower. I though oh gosh. then i decided to try a fully loaded round that i had gotten and it would not either. i then pushed it into the magazine and them brought the bolt forward and it chambered fine. sooooo - is this normal. is there a trick to chambering just one round without using the magazine well. not a big deal but just sort of strange. Looking forward to see how it shoots. Such a cool rifle. i just love iron sight shooting. will be shooting on the 200 yard line as soon as i get a few reloads. I hope i dont have to mess with the front sights. will be interesting. that is the most aggravating thing on older military rifles is the windage.

You were not allowing the case to go against the bolt face, but actually against the large extractor.
Running a cartridge through the magazine allows the bolt to move the cartridge forward and the case rim rides up the bolt face and slips under the extractor.

Here's a good site for information on many types of surplus rifles. On the right side is a break down of the M98 bolt.

Thanks for the info NCsmitty. I did not watch very closely. shessssh. Good to know for sure and thanks for the link.

You will have to see where your reloads are hitting, but often surplus ammo will strike high at the lowest rear sight setting. Often replacing the front sight with a taller insert will adjust the sights to a lower POI.
Regardless, you should be able to adjust to match your loads, just let us know how you make out.

I just read where Hornady is going to produce a run of match ammo for the K98 for the retro-sniper competitions. That would probly be top notch ammo for your new K98.

As soon as i get a few loaded of different loads i will let you all know. I will definitely be reloading. I hardly ever buy ammo anymore. I did get a box of Romanian ammo but will not shoot it. I is corrosive and i just dont like shooting that stuff in my rifles - not when i can reload. little more work but i think it is worth it. again thanks all for info.
