I'm fairly new to hand loading for rifle calibers so please excuse my lack of knowledge about the various available powders. I plan to get a 260 rem in the very near future and work up some loads for it. Rifle powders are pretty scarce these days. I'm using imr4064 for my 270win. My question is what would be a "modern" powder to use in the 260 rem to hand load with in relation to extending barrel life. It seems the statement that modern metallurgy and powders will extend barrel life in the 6.5mm rounds is used quite often in he research I have done. So what constitutes a modern powder? What are some examples?

Any differences in the powder you're using are going to be negligible compared to how hot you're pushing the bullet down the tube. Hot loads are hot loads whether you load them with the newest hot rod powder or good ole 4895. You're already working with a great thousand yard cartridge with the barrel life of a .308, I wouldn't get too preoccupied with your powder selection. Find a load that shoots and shoot it.

Win 748 has a lower flame temp and extends barrel life compared to other similar speed powders.
Good choice for full auto or bumpfire AR's. It also works well in the 260.
