i just bought an M1 garand.. its a 1943 springfield.. beautiful, clean, 80% rifling.... and well, the guys sending me some extra en bloc magazines and i was wondering if i could convert a couple of them to 5 round magazines so i wont have to buy any online?

Yes. You'll need to cut them part way down & curl the sheetmetal so that only 5 shots will fit in them. You can make two shot clips and single load clips by cutting & bending. You can also cut & bend clips so they don't eject on the last shot. The clip can be easily removed with a common screw driver or something similar when you are done. Just cut a piece of the clip to be bent outward and hook on part of the magwell to hold the clip at the right height.

Some say you cannot top off a Garand clip while it's in the magwell, but I have done it while out hunting. You have to be careful as you have to hold the bolt back while pressing the rounds into the clip. I have topped off a partial clip back to a full 8 rounds but it was more practical to simply top the clip off to 7. The lips of the clip can be trimmed a little to make this easier

hmm, you know what would really be cool would be if the mag didnt eject on the last round... but you were able to still remove it by pressing the button on the side.. anyway, do you have any photos of how one modifies an en bloc to reduce capacity?

aah.. i see how its done by looking at photos of the 5 rounders, anyone know how far down i have to make the cuts for it to hold only 5?

No brainer to me. Spring steel doesn't like to be fiddled with. If I had to have 5-round clips for hunting, I'd just buy them and save the 8-rounders for zombies. I tend to gather as many enblocs as I can get, I need to get some more. A .50 cal. ammo can will hold a lot of loaded clips!

It is a problem to get them just right, the best bet it to purchase some 5 rounders....

also, try to stay away from the 'chinese' made clips, yeah, you can get a boat load of theme cheap, but only half of them, if your lucky, will work right!

animus......what you are wishing for is called......a..."Holbrook device"....sometimes called a thumbsaver....I have one on my garand...........it is a drop in device....replaces the operating rod catch.....now my garand and my M1a function the same.....and it makes sense to add a "schuster nut" to your garand..
