Modifying the Grip on an XD

I hope this isn't off topic guys. I did a search and didn't find anything that seemed to cover my question.

I'd really like to get an XD, but my thumb isn't quite long enough to depress the magazine release without shifting my grip. I can reach it, but I can't depress it.

Is it possible to create a shallow groove in the grip so that I'll be able to depress the magazine release, or would I be dangerously weakening the structure of the firearm.

If so, what should I use to create the groove?

The mag release on the XD is ambi so you can hit it from both sides, I just used my middle finger, it takes some practice but it is the most comfortable for me.
