I'm breaking in a brand new armalite ar10 .308. Manufacturer suggests breaking in the first 200 rounds with a moly coated bullet. I've loaded 100 hornady moly coated boattail hprounds. I'm half way there. I'm having trouble finding more 168gr.bt moly coated hornady. BUT I found these XLC Barnes bullets 180 gr. hollowpoint boattail. On the Barnes box it says "Barnes solid dry film coated x-bullets" The bullets are solid blue, except the bottom of the boattail. If someon can please inform me I would greatley appreciate it. I'm sending a few pics for reference. Thanks for any help.

The Barnes coating is not the same as moly. Moly coating is a simple process, involving a tumbler, a empty clean peanut butter jar(small one), a spoonfull of moly and an old towel. Buying nakid bullets and coating them yourself will save a little cash. There are moly kits available at Cabelas, Midway and Brownells and some better reloading supply stores.

I would really like to know the rationale behind that. I thought barrel break in involved frequent cleaning so bullets down the bore could smooth out barrel imperfections. It would seem to me that moly would defeat that purpose. I have also heard, that if metal isn't cleaned properly after moly use, it can etch metal. Having never used it (and I never plan to) I don't really know first hand.

I have used moly since way back and have not seen any of the alleged etching or the related corrosion in any of my firearms. I have seen increased accuracy and better all around performance.
Just my two cents. And each to his own.

Thanks guys, I only need to load 200 and clean, shoot, etc. Armalites break-in recommendation. Thanks again,
Dave

Read something over on "thefiringline.com" about barrel break in.
Some barrel makers, void the warranty, if you used moly bullets.
Just what I read over there.
