LAMAR, Colo. — A woman accused of drowning her two young children in a bathtub before a failed attempt on her own life was arrested Saturday on murder charges.

Rebekah Amaya (search) faces two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Grace Headlee, 4, and Gabriel Amaya, 5 months, according to Lamar Police Cpt. Rick Copess.

The coroner said both children drowned and determined the deaths were homicides, the first in Lamar in since 1992.

Amaya, a registered nurse, was being returned to Lamar from a Colorado Springs (search) hospital, where she was treated after she cut her wrists in the suicide attempt.

Her husband, Leo Amaya, returned from work Thursday to find his infant son and stepdaughter unconscious in the bathtub and his wife unconscious nearby.

Rebekah Amaya will be jailed without bond pending court proceedings, Copess said during a brief news conference. He declined to answer questions.

"We wish (the families) whatever comfort and patience they might be able to find," Copess said.

Michelle Neibert, a friend of Leo Amaya, said Rebekah Amaya had shown signs of serious depression in the week before the children's death, including a crying spell during church last Sunday and an inability to sleep.

Leo Amaya told police his wife had been under stress.

"Words cannot express the shock and grief we feel at this time," Leo Amaya said in a statement Friday. The family could not immediately be reached for comment after Rebekah Amaya's arrest.

The Amaya family has been a part of the community in southeastern Colorado for years.

"It's such a close-knit community that it really makes you wonder about the people you know and the people you live with," said 32-year-old Debbie Medrano after her two daughters placed stuffed animals outside the Amaya's home.

Residents have been dropping off flowers, stuffed animals, cards, candles and cherub statues in memory of Grace and Gabriel.

Mark Headlee, a Lamar police officer who is Grace's father and Rebekah Amaya's ex-husband, returned from Utah, where he had been on military duty. His family did not return a call for comment Saturday.

This just goes to show that it is not safe to keep bathtubs in the home. Who knows when some law abiding citizen is going to lose it and start drowning their children ...?

Really sad ... :(

Naturally, I can't find the link, but I remember reading a post or article that compared the number of gun deaths of children to the number of children killed by their own mothers. (I don't think there where any cases of killer moms with guns, IIRC)

The bottom line was that there was something like a 90:1 killer mom:child gun death ratio. :what:

It's pretty clear that the millyuns of misguided mommies are barking up the wrong tree.

What was it Jesus said about worrying about splinter in your brother's eye, while you had a beam in your own?

Can't ban water since our bodies are 90% water. Far safer to limit bath tub capacity to 1". Perhaps we lower the overflow and put water restriction devices on the faucet to accomplish this. Encourage sponge bathing for a safer society? Excuse me while I get out the Eu de Pew to mask the musk.

I feel so sorry for Mr. Amaya, Mr. Headlee and the two children's grandparents. That's horrible.
Making light of it is dark humor I know, and I won't do that here, but I can't imagine coming home to that. I'd probably feel as tho' I had much to do with it as I should have seen the signs of this woman's mental deterioration and taken the necessary steps to get her help. And she was a nurse? (Physician, heal thyself?)
And she can't even kill herself properly?

What IS the world coming to? (OK, its been going on forever, its just tough to read about it daily)

Some people should not have kids. Or get more help from their spousal units. Or take better medication. OR all three.

A tragedy.

Adios

Got together with some friends last night; the talk turned to discoveries that a lot of apparent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome deaths were actually attributable to children being smothered by parents. I don't have any numbers.

Tragic. No answers here.
