Mayor Joseph Jaskiewicz announced this morning that he has decided to withdraw a controversial gun ordinance that would have placed restrictions on target shooting.
Before making his public announcement, Jaskiewicz sent a letter to Town Councilors Friday, notifying them of his decision.
“I have had a significant number of phone calls and letters opposing the ordinance, and very, very few letters and calls in support of the ordinance,” the letter said. “As I have stated repeatedly, this ordinance was drafted with the intent of assuring the public’s safety with respect to target shooting, certainly never to take any one’s rights away.”
Last Monday, opponents of the gun ordinance swarmed Town Council chambers, hoping to express their opposition to the proposal. More than 170 people showed up to the meeting. The capacity of the council chambers is 108.
