Montville, Connecticut Mayor Proposing Anti-Gun Ordinance!

Tuesday, August 01, 2006

The Mayor of Montville, Joseph Jaskiewicz (D), has proposed an ordinance that would ban the discharge of a firearm within the town of Montville.

This proposed ordinance would prohibit all types of recreational shooting, even where it is safe to do so. More importantly, it makes no exception for the use of a firearm for self-defense.

This proposal will officially be introduced at the August 14, 2006 Town Hall meeting at 7:00 p.m and it is likely that Mayor Jaskiewicz will push for the proposal to go before the people as a referendum.

My town too has a ban on discharging a gun (or other fun items) within city limits, though there is an exception for self defense up here. Didn't the state supreme court (or maybe one of the appeals courts) make a ruling agianst a towns ordnance against bow discharging because it violated some hunting law or other? Anyhow, given that self defense is protected by our states constitution ("Every man has the right to bear arms for the defense of himself and the state" Article 1 Section 15), I would not be too worried about that aspect. Hey- that may even be this legislations achilese tendon if it does get passed and needed to get challeneged.

I do believe there is a gun club (Montville Sportsmans??) out there that would be put under.

If I need to use my pistol for self-defense, the last thing I'm going to worry about is a town ordinance that is directly in opposition to state law.

Then again, it could be useful for a plea bargain! "I'll plead guilty to violating the local ordinance in exchange for a walk on the 2nd-degree murder charge."

This proposed ordinance would prohibit all types of recreational shooting, even where it is safe to do so.

I'm more worried about this part. I think the mayor is trying to shutdown our range. It's a great range with a lot of members from all over southeastern CT. I guess the town of Simsbury tried this tactic on Metacon. :cuss:

I am familiar with Metacon's situation, being that their local.

Sorry about my error, it's not Montville Sportsmans Club. The local club is Quaker Hill Rod and Gun Club. My error, which should not have been. I shot there in a couple of matches- nice facilities. It would be a pitty to see them get screwed over like that.
