Custom, 3 1/4" barreled S&W Model 25-2 in .45ACP (of course) . . . my favorite handgun of any type . . .
NEXT . . .
The original .40S&W caliber revolver gun games "race gun" . . . the S&W Performance Center Model 646 . . . an "L" frame w/ Titanium cylinder and skeletonized 4" barrel for faster handling qualities . . . and moon-clipped of course! Made in August 2001 . . . and soon to be killed off due to IDPA's whiners saying such an advanced handgun wasn't "fair."
IMHO, one of those times when things went backwards in the handgun competition arena. Better guns are something that SHOULD be a good thing! After this run of 400 PC guns, the remaining barrels and cylinders were used to make a final run of Model 646 revolvers that look a lot like the 686 profile . . . and that was the end of the .40S&W caliber S&W revolvers. All are accurate guns . . . and all were pre-internal lock revolvers. Hard to find today, 7-8 years later.
BTW, the 646/40 S&W platform was not perfect. The Titanium cylinders didn't agree sometimes with some of the 40 S&W cartridges and would make cartridge ejection in a match sometimes difficult. Plus, the "rims" of the 40 S&W brands of ammo were of different thicknesses . . . causing the ammo to flop around in the moon clip. Smith included two thicknesses of moon clips in each case, so you could find something that worked pretty well for your favorite brand of cartridge case.
Thus . . . this was an evolutionary product that had lots of promise . . . and a project that would have been perfected if it hadn't been killed out due to the competition rule changes . . . sort of like what NASCAR did to the winged Dodge Daytonas back around 1970. Kind of sad really, for the world has gone to .40S&W automatics and this would have been an incredible round for self defense in revolvers.
