Moonclips for a Taurus 608

Has anyone had their Taurus 608 cut for use with moonclips?

Does anyone do this work on Taurus guns?


Would the S&W moonclips work once the machining was done? In other words, are the Taurus and S&W 8-shot cylinders the same size?

Not the same size and no one makes moon clips that will fit.

got a 608 last year. gave up on the moonclip search shortly thereafter.
there is no new news, to me anyway.

What about speedloaders -- other than those one piece rubber thingys?

Maxfire is the speedloader I was thinking of.


BUT, let me ask you this -- if the S&W 8 shot and the Taurus 608 use the same size Maxfire speedloader -- why wouldnt the moonclips work if machined properly?

got one of those rubber thingies laying in a box here Somewhere. if i could find it i would mail it to you for free. i found my fingers are just as good and i dont have to take the time to place rounds in the strip.

someone thought they would be good for reloading in a self defense situation. some people like them for that. my guns for SD are smaller, lighter, and hold fewer rounds. speedloaders for these are abundant.

when i purchased the 608, i had no ported gun. i got it mostly for a fun gun, and it is, and to see how the ports build up lead deposits. will continue to shoot it ocassionally and watch for buildup. it is building up as i continue to experiment.

Well, I was all ready to refer you to Bob Miles in Gardena, CA. who did my 686+. I called him up and he says he is no longer doing the 608 conversion, either.

I asked him why and he said the 608s just don't last long enough to make them worth the cost of conversion. Of course, he is probably talking about competition shooting as that is the most common use of moonclips. Revolver competitors often do over 1000 practice rounds a month. I know I came close to that and am not even a serious competitor.

To keep those ports clean try West Coast Bullets copper plated bullets. I have a 627 V-comp that has a false muzzle for use when you are not using the removable compensator and the inside of the false muzzle is a terrible lead trap. I got tired of cleaning that and the barrel and now shoot copper plated exclusively, even on the .357 magnums.

In the August 1997 issue of Performance Shooter, kind of a higher-tech sister publication to Gun Tests, Roger Eckstine described setting a Taurus 608 up for IPSC and Bianchi competition.

In the December 1997 issue, he described how he had beaten the gun to death in six months' competition and practice.

The October 2002 Gun Tests thought a 608 was a good buy and said it could be cut for moon clips by Clark. But Clark does not today list clip conversions for Taurus.

Yep -- sounds like the 608 is a decent gun, but maybe not a great competition gun.

I bought a 625 Mountain Gun over the weekend -- only 6 shots -- but already set up for moon clips. I will see if that pacifies me...

You are better off.
I have a 686 conversion and those long skinny .38 Spl and .357 Mag rounds don't line up as well as a short heavy .45. I have read of ICORE shooters using .38 Short Colt for easier loading and ejection, but that is a very specialized application.
