The students of one of our local schools needed to raise money for a trip . A local Maine guide donated a hunting trip for them to raffle off to help raise that money . That really got some people's blood to boil . They have started a petition to "stop the madness" , and rather than say what what they think is so wrong with the raffle , I'll let them say it for themselves.

Scorning the usual bake sales, car washes, etc., Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine, is sponsoring a bear hunting raffle to raise money to send music students on a trip to NYC. In light of the number of tragic school shootings that have taken place in the U.S., for a school to associate itself with any activity supporting guns is shockingly inappropriate. Bear hunting is particularly cruel and inhumane in Maine, where unsportsmanlike practices are used that have been outlawed in every other US state.

Do we want to teach our young people to achieve their aspirations through hard work so that they value their own achievements or do we want to teach them to use guns and the exploitation of animals? Students themselves are selling tickets for this event and the owner of a chain of bear hunting camps in Maine is reaping the reward of advertising this school connection in hunting magazines sold nationwide and abroad. Although the alternative of photographing a bear is allegedly offered, this isn't mentioned in the web advertising nor have ads been placed in photography or travel magazines.

Please help Another Chance in our efforts to call a halt to this ill-conceived and unacceptable fundraising attempt. If you are a resident of Berwick, Lebanon, or North Berwick, Maine, please sign this petition. If you live elsewhere please sign our petition for non-residents at

Maine has a rich and long history of hunting and gun ownership , which might be why there are as few signatures as there is . Even a recent poll by the local news found over 75% of Mainer's had no problem with this . But , 30 years ago this would not even had been an issue .

Do we want to teach our young people to achieve their aspirations through hard work so that they value their own achievements or do we want to teach them to use guns and the exploitation of animals?

Another example of liberal brainwashing.

that's shameful. and it is disgusting to me that they are attempting to connect the school selling a hunting trip to fund it's music program with the school supporting school shootings. whoever these people are they are unwelcome anywhere near me.

:barf: Let's have the bear poulation spiral out of control and not thin them so the cute and cudly creatures lose their fear of man totally and can maul people on a whim...

Bear hunting is particularly cruel and inhumane in Maine, where unsportsmanlike practices are used that have been outlawed in every other US state.

Where does this author attribute this information from? And even if it were true, does this mean that the people involved in this event have to adopt these same so-called unsportsmanlike practices?

for a school to associate itself with any activity supporting guns is shockingly inappropriate

That's his opinion... I for one think it is entirely appropriate for people to learn and know how to handle firearms and obtain food the natural way as opposed to just getting their meat out of a conveyer factory slaughter system.

Sounds like some of the former California fruits have found their way to Maine to me .

As these morons leave the land they've already successfully ruined with their idiotic ideas they need to be told to **** when/where they relocated to and that we like our local traditions just fine .

It's well past time to quit worrying about being rude and all that garbage to these pukes , they have no qualms with destroying our way of life , why should we care about theirs ?

Lol , if you look at where the people are from(signing the petition) , you'll see it's NOT predominately Mainer's . Belgium , Greece , United Kingdom, Serbia, etc etc . What the heck is their stake in what happens in a Maine school ?

Nah, they are from much closer. Mass residents are moving to NH and ME in record numbers due to them hating what MA has become. Unfortunately they are too damn dumb to see that they created the problem and are now doing the same to ME and NH.

Not sure what this means but there's around 4 female signatories for every male. The teddy bear factor? I wonder how cute they'd find a bear to be if confronted by one in real life?

And like someone else mentioned not a whole lot of folks from Maine on the thing either.

Well , we true Mainer"s do have a sense of humor . Someone sent a nice email to the folks wanting to stop this raffle .

It was with great interest and a little sadness that I read of the Noble High School Music Department's raffling of a Maine Black Bear Hunt, with the stated goal of sending its young musicians on a trip to New York City.
Even though a guide will help, I'm sure you know such an endeavor is still fraught with danger. Why any one would put them self in an unknown environment, far from home, where one could easily become turned around and wander lost for days before eventually becoming the victim of a predatory animal is beyond my comprehension. I might add that I find the mere thought of participating in such event both cruel and repugnant, WHAT ARE THEY THINKING! But enough of the trip to New York, where may I purchase tickets for the bear hunt raffle?

I'm doing my part by ordering a few tickets for myself . If anyone else wants to show their support feel free to hit their website .

You can't blame the anti-gun crowd on anybody else. Those people are residents of Maine. They're officially yours. Keep your whacky folks in Maine and don't send them to California.

Why is this an either/or? I achieve what I set out to do, I use guns, and I "exploit" cows--they provide milk (which I drink), and are made of meat (which I eat). I fail to see the problem, other than their use of the word "exploit." It's really "maintaining" the animals by culling the herd (is it herd?) of bears.

Um.... something weird going on here....

http://www.acanimalrescue.com/ & http://www.noblehighmusic.com/ go to the same place. Look at the links at the bottom.

That's because the owner of the "animal rescue" site is the one that started the petitions/hubbub about the raffle .

Vice president of South Berwick’s Another Chance animal rescue thrift shop and animal adoption center, Manley established the Web site, www.noblehighmusic.org, under the heading, "Stop the Noble High School bear hunt raffle."

It's amazing how some people can bitch no matter what people do. Why do they have a problem with hunting animals? It isn't torture for them and it isn't some horrible practice. It seems like they want to give animals the rights of people, and take some of my rights away.

If this fundraiser is allowed to continue, how many other school groups will decide to raise money the easy way?

So, a hunting trip brings in easy money? I always thought bake sales and pancake breakfasts were easy money. I guess it's just the Californian in me that doesn't see hoe a hunting trip is such a popular prize for a raffle. Oh wait, maybe it's because people like hunting and these people need to ****.

Also, I find it amusing that they are suggesting you report them to paypal. They aren't just against hunting, they are against raffling anything.

I also like the picture of the gun with an X and the cuddly little bears. "When you put it that way, of course I'll sign!"

Petition

I signed it and got this on the acknowledgement page.

In Alaska, it's legal to gun wolves down from airplanes or chase them to exhaustion and then shoot them from the ground.

This brutal practice of aerial hunting could soon spread to the Greater Yellowstone region unless we stop it now.

Urge Congress to end aerial hunting of wolves now!

Another example of bots in action going after keywords instead of being read by humans.
