More Auto-Relist "Trolling For Suckers" auctions on Gunbroker?

... When I read questions like the OP's, it comes across as if they think they have a "right" to buy stuff at 3% over dealer cost. ...

Then you read this one, at least, incorrectly.

My post is simply about an observation that I made after being away from Gunbroker for an extended period of time.

I did not complain, condemn the "Trollers" or even offer my opinion of the practice, just commented upon the fact that it seems to me that they appear to represent a higher percentage of the auctions now.

Yeah Exbat, I do agree with you.
I've bought quite a few off of there over the past 7 years or so and have noticed a change.
I mean, come on! You are in business. Price your merchandise where you want and see if it sells.

Definitely feels like more dealers using the good 'ol reserve more often now. Just greed, nothing more or less.
By using the reserve with a low start, they stand a better chance of getting contacts from interested buyers asking the reserve amount.
That enables them to establish off site communications through regular email and make off site sales. More profit.
The seller has nothing to lose from this occasional practice at all, even if he burns the buyer with a mis-represented gun.
It is a good way for them to dump problem collectible guns with no negative feedback. Pretty sad, huh?

But I have always looked at GB as a place to get what you WANT, as soon as tomorrow, not necessarily the best deal everytime.

My take, JT

Interesting --- Where do you get this from ? Every week I receive phone calls or e-mails from buyers who want to buy it now off the site . I have yet to sell one that way as I remind the buyers that Gunbroker services are not so expensive that they should be cheated from them. Yet, here you say the oppisate is true ? Realy ?

He will be banned from the auction site if he's ever caught doing this!

If they ever change their policy to where you have to pay for every listing (no auto-relist for free) things will change drastically.
Yeah, the most drastic change would be the disappearance of GunBroker if they change their policy.

I believe you MN. Those buyers just want the gun now, without the bidding war. I do not know why they would want it without the minimal protection of GB's fraud services though.

What I am saying is that if you were unscrupulous, you could dump an occasional gun off site to one of them and the sale would be final. You can pull a listing whenever you want. As many of the sellers are also stocking dealers with web sites, it is done legimately every day when a sale takes place at the shop or off their web site.

As to Bluehawk, I know GB's stated policy. I also know that since GB makes it's money from the seller, that is who they side with. And they don't kick off the cash cow that quickly either, especially for a few infractions. Not having a correct street address is one of those listed infractions. Yet they still allow sellers to use P.O. boxes.
Several years ago, I bought a gun from a guy in Arizona with a BIN. I contacted him that day, ready to send the Postal money order. He contacted back to my email address off GB that I was to send it to an address in Florida instead.
I was naturally reluctant to do so. I wrote him that I was not comfortable sending what amounted to cash to another address that was not listed with GB.

After he called me a bleeping a-hole for not complying, I told him I was contacting GB to get the issue resolved. I never raised the tone of my mails to him at all. GB insisted I send the money to Florida. They said the address issue was cleared up and that I would be a non paying bidder if I did not continue the sale.
I then sent GB copies of the three mean spirited, curse filled mails I had gotten from the seller for 'turning him in' to GB. I told them that, given his attitude toward me, I felt they should cancel the sale. No go on GB's part.

Sorry for the long read. Just don't count on GB to back you as a buyer.
In fact, they tell you so on every page of their site. Caveat emptor.

Just my experiences and opinion, JT

I seldom go to GB because of the ridiculously high prices asked. I still look occasionally in case there it something that "reaches out and grabs me"--lol.

it's not greed, it's called Free Market Economy....the people that whine on this thread about the "high prices" act like someone is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to buy a gun off of gunbroker.

<nodding> Even with the many "Trolling" auctions, I enjoy perusing GB periodically for my favorite search flavors in a relaxed hunt for one of those "grabber" items.

When one does grab me, the Seller is in for a series of communications in order for me to determine missing details about the piece, prior to my deciding whether or not to bid.

I have also noticed that it appears that fewer of the Sellers of the milsurps that I like take the time to include all of the pertinent details about the rifle, so several days may be involved before I have enough info to make an informed decision, y'know?

I have acquired more than a few nice firearms on Gunbroker since I started with them in 2001.

I've bought a bit of stuff off gunbroker, and sold some too, but realistic prices all around. ALL of the auctions aren't insanely high, you just have to set your price range in the dollar amount you want to pay, if there isn't anything, then wait a week and do it again!

Gunbroker fees

Gunbroker absolutely charges to list. I have advertised for the last 4 years and paid an average $2.75 for every gun every time I listed. In addition ther charge a percentage of the selling price as a fee.

Correction

Gunbroker does not charge for the basic listing insertion. They charge for enhancements which is what my $2.75 was for. I found the basic ad draws little attention. Sorry for misleading anyone.
