I haven't shot my K-31 lately. Been too busy varmit hunting. ;)

But today, to kick off the Memorial Day weekend, I hit the range after work. I expected a crowd, but the range was nearly empty. Two guys with ARs, and one guy with his custom 1,000 yard rifle in .243WSSM.

I was disappointed to see that my Darrel's scout scope mount on the K-31 had loosened up. Bummer. Had to re-zero. But after I did, I put 4 rounds in a row touching a 1" Shoot N See at 100 yards.

This rifle is 70 years old this year.

For those interested, the load is my "economy precision load." 150gr. Sierra GK over 42gr of H335 in a resized .284Win brass, ignited by a CCI 250 primer.

The guy with the custom rifle was working up his 1,000 yard load in the .243 WSSM for a competition in Reno coming up. He was shooting at 200 yards (longest target stands at this range.) Found his sweet spot at 2,950fps with a 110gr. bullet. Man, that round looks weird. The bullet is as long as the brass. But man, that brass is fat.

He told me he had a K-31 that he loved, and asked me if I wanted to shoot a few from my K-31 over his Ohler chronograph. I had already chronoed the load, but was grateful for the chance to double-check with something more accurate than my Chrony. I also wanted to check bullet drop at 200 yards.

So I touched off 3 rounds. I couldn't see the holes with my 2.5 power scout scope, but he could see through his mega-scope. He said it was a nice group, about 4" low. When we packed up, he gave me the target. Granted, he was shooting to check velocity, rather than shooting for groups. He had about 20 rounds nicely centered, spanning about 4".

My 3 rounds covered 2.5 inches, running from 3.5 to 5 inches low.

:D

Gotta love a K-31. If you live near a Big-5, they have them on sale for $89 this week. Best $ per MOA around.

I've been looking at getting a K-31 when the ATF approves my C&R. Where did you get yours. I was thinking about getting one at J&G Sales. They are only $85, but I have seen others going for about $130. Are the J&G K-31s in bad shape or do they just have a good deal. I have heard about making 7.5 Swiss brass out of .284Win brass, glad to see that works so well. It will be sad to see my wallet leave me when I get my C&R though. :p

I got mine through AIM Surplus. IIRC, it was $89 plus $20 for the FFL fee plus $16 for shipping. Makes $89 out the door at Big 5 look pretty good. Especilly because you can look 'em over and not depend on the luck og the draw.

Yes, .284Win brass works fine. That's all I've ever used in mine. Just run it through the 7.5 Swiss resizing/decapping dies (lube well!) and then trim to length.

My K-31 is by far my favorite rifle. Found it at a Maryland gun show (79.99) before I moved last October. This thing (1950 made beech stock) is way more accurate than my meager rifle skills.

I have since then stockpiled 900 rounds of k-11, only to find out Wolf will start making ammo!

I am REAALLY tempted to get another from AIM!

OK, looks like AIM is the place to get a K-31 and if they are good at that price then there should be no problem with the ones at J&G. (If AIM doesn't have any when I get my C&R) Thanks for all the advice.

If you're looking for a shooter K-31, and don't care about stock condition, just get it from whoever has them the cheapest. I don't believe there exists a mechanically bad k-31.

Graf & Sons sells 7.5 brass under the Graf name.

What was the chronographed velocity?
According to the Oehler triple-skyscreen chronograph, the average of my 3 shots was 2,554, with an extreme spread of 21fps.

The evil K-31. Now that Wolf is making the ammo, it could replace the Mosin -Nagant as the low-cost & cheap-to-shoot milsurp rifle, except that K-31's are graceful to the eye and disturbingly accurate.

Maybe it's time to get another one. Just as a backup, you know....

I don't care about looks as long as it is presentable. I was thinking about getting two and use the better one as a shooter and the other (Gasp  ) as a parts gun (Though I have never herd of a K-31 breaking :p ) I'll probably just get one first and see how well I like owning one.

You'd be hard pressed to find one that doesn't have a fantastic finish on the metal. The stocks leave a great deal to be desired, but as long as you find one without any bad gouges in it, there's nothing to stop you from doing a little refinishing.

I love mine. I sing to it, write it poetry, and leave Belgian chocolates and expensive silken lingerie under its pillow. Absolutely fantastic rifle.

Recently got my first from Aim (one of the preorders they are doing now). I definitely got a shooter, and I don't mean it shoots well cause I haven't tried yet. The metal was significantly rusty in spots and the walnut stock was covered in deep dings and scrapes. Good points included no rust with good finish under the wood, everything seems mechanically sound, and the grungy barrel became sparkling with one boresnaking. The exposed metal cleaned up to show only some pits where the rust was but little finish on the receiver. The stock needed major sanding and refinishing to make it presentable which it now is. Check out some of the surplus boards and it seems that this is usual for AIM these days. Likely the bottom of the barrel as the supply dries up. I guess it would be in poor taste to contact the Swiss owner whose name I found under the buttplate (which by the way was 100% rusted on both sides) and admonish him for such poor weapon maintenance. This was my first C&R purchase and I actually enjoyed the "beautifying" experience although my heart sank when I first saw it. In the end I only care if it shoots well.

cracked butt, very happy when I opened up that Dunhams ad today. Unfortunately, I'm going to CMP the end of this week, so the K31 gets put off until at least friday :(

Further if another 03 follows me home :( (not likely to happen though, the only way it will is if I find one with a MKI stock to put on my other MKI)
