I haven't shot my K-31 lately. Been too busy varmit hunting.
But today, to kick off the Memorial Day weekend, I hit the range after work. I expected a crowd, but the range was nearly empty. Two guys with ARs, and one guy with his custom 1,000 yard rifle in .243WSSM.
I was disappointed to see that my Darrel's scout scope mount on the K-31 had loosened up. Bummer. Had to re-zero. But after I did, I put 4 rounds in a row touching a 1" Shoot N See at 100 yards.
This rifle is 70 years old this year.
For those interested, the load is my "economy precision load." 150gr. Sierra GK over 42gr of H335 in a resized .284Win brass, ignited by a CCI 250 primer.
The guy with the custom rifle was working up his 1,000 yard load in the .243 WSSM for a competition in Reno coming up. He was shooting at 200 yards (longest target stands at this range.) Found his sweet spot at 2,950fps with a 110gr. bullet. Man, that round looks weird. The bullet is as long as the brass. But man, that brass is fat.
He told me he had a K-31 that he loved, and asked me if I wanted to shoot a few from my K-31 over his Ohler chronograph. I had already chronoed the load, but was grateful for the chance to double-check with something more accurate than my Chrony. I also wanted to check bullet drop at 200 yards.
So I touched off 3 rounds. I couldn't see the holes with my 2.5 power scout scope, but he could see through his mega-scope. He said it was a nice group, about 4" low. When we packed up, he gave me the target. Granted, he was shooting to check velocity, rather than shooting for groups. He had about 20 rounds nicely centered, spanning about 4".
My 3 rounds covered 2.5 inches, running from 3.5 to 5 inches low.
Gotta love a K-31. If you live near a Big-5, they have them on sale for $89 this week. Best $ per MOA around.
