'Gun crime is driving people from our bars'

REVELLERS are steering clear of clubs and bars in South London because they are terrified of gun crime.
That's the verdict of London Mayor Ken Livingstone's advisor on race, Lee Jasper, who is a long-time Brixton resident.
Mr Jasper said: "If you look at areas where there is gun crime, like Brixton, people stay away from these areas and this damages the communities.
"You have youngsters who are concerned about going to certain dances or raves.
"At a time when unemployment is still a problem in the black community in South London, we can't afford to be losing businesses and money."
Last month cops closed down two Brixton pubs amid fears that the licensees were being intimidated by gun-toting gangs.
Two men ended up in hospital after they were shot outside one of the pubs - The Harriers in Herne Hill Road - on July 19.
Both The Harriers and The Duke of Wellington in Acre Lane are expected to re-open soon.
Simeon Bowring, promotions manager at the Dogstar bar on Coldharbour Lane, said he thought Brixton's reputation might keep a few outsiders away but the area was actually very safe.
He added: "I walk around Brixton at all kinds of hours and have not had any problems for years. There may still be a problem in people's minds, especially those who live outside the area, but I really think it's a problem of perception.
"We haven't had any problems at this venue at all."
Mr Jasper also revealed that he had recently met Home Office minister Caroline Flint MP to discuss the re-investment of confiscated criminal assets into areas hit by drug crime.
He added: "Drug economies within communities generate millions of pounds. When this money is confiscated it should be returned to the communities who suffer from these crimes."
Mr Jasper was speaking at Scotland Yard after attending the launch of a new poster campaign for Operation Trident - the Met Police campaign that targets black-on-black gun violence.
Mr Jasper said: "This advertising campaign, produced in partnership with the Independent Advisory Group representing London's black communities, emphasises the impact of gun violence for normal everyday people.
"To the families of the gunmen I say 'Where do you want to visit your relatives? In prison or in the cemetery'.
"It is that stark a choice."
