Went with the wife to the flea market this morning. She got some Lillys and I picked up another old cheap beater single shot to ad to my collection. My 12 gauge Stevens 94 came from the flea market and it's great but could be lighter. Been wanting a 20 gauge so I negotiated with this guy and got a Stevens 9478. Much newer model than my other. Got it on the cheap or so I thought till I noticed the plastic trigger guard. Any body have experience with one of these?

I've got a couple of single shot Stevens shotguns, both were free. One is a 940 in .410, the other a 940E in .20ga. Both make fine field and farm guns. Congratulations on your flea market find.

I had a 12ga model 9478 back in the early 80s. I liked it and hunted often with it. I never had any problem with the trigger guard, nor with the break-down button in front of the trigger guard. When I was transferred overseas, I sold it for $50. Wish I still had it. I thought it was a well-made utility firearm.

The hammer falls from the half cock position when the trigger is pulled on mine. I wonder if this normal. Did you ever notice this on yours?

I just think its cool you were able to find a complete gun that works at a flea market.
At this flea market firearms are a thing you see regularly. Problem is weeding out all the junk. Sometimes you find guys who don't know what they have, a fella who had an old carcano rifle that he presumed to be missing some kind of fixed magazine because of the hole in the bottom of the receiver. There is a row of guys who pick the same tables everytime they come to sell and trade old rimfire rifles. There are guys selling complete hunks of junk too of course. There was also a guy there that Saturday with an old Springfield musket from 1846. The lock functioned but the wood and barrel both looked way to bad for it to be safe. Some Saturdays this place is like a micro gun show just with no hand gun sales allowed.

IMG_20220620_222503993_MP.jpg the 20 gauge has what appears to be a crudely modified youth stock on it. I can make it work for now but I am 6' 3" with long arms so to achieve a good sight picture I gotta rest this little short thing high in my shoulder. Gonna try to find a good price on a grown up stock or just cust some plates of wood, glue them in place, then trim the to fit and re finish. The stain color on this gun is hideous to me anyway

IMG_20220620_223128549.jpg note the difference in stock length. The longer 12 gauge has been my weapon of choice over 3 other shotguns for small game hunting since I've owned it but the light weight of the 20 appeals to me so much since the 12 took the place of my SxS my pump or my auto just because it's easier to carry around all day and a 20 will be even lighter

The real shame is that the forend on the 12 is wore slap out. It is the snap on style and though I replaced all the guts and pivot plate screws it still wants to come off when I fire. Finally broke down and ordered a whole new assembly from numerich that sadly won't match the finish on the stock...

I don't think that is normal. I honestly don't remember mine ever doing that either. I doubt I even used the half-cock function. Good luck with yours and thanks for the post.

Yea I noticed with this design the hammer does not rest against and can not engage, the firing pin while in the hammer down position so I'm not sure why they even have a half cock position. The original Stevens 94 has a rebounding hammer that lands in half cock after it is fired and a free floating firing pin. This gun has a spring loaded firing pin that only protrudes when the hammer falls. However usingy finger to test I noticed you can pull the trigger from half cock and it makes the pin protrude but not as hard or as far as it would from full cock. I still wonder if it's a design flaw

I watched a video by ruger of their 10/22 trigger guard, they dropped a 4lb weight 3ft on a composit guard with no damage. They did the same with a metal unit and it cracked.
