so i picked up my m24/47 on friday and spent the majority of the day cleaning it. i still got some questions.

is thier a way to operate the bolt/action with out cooking the spring?

how can i get the smeel of the comsoline off?

i was cleaning the barrel with hoopers 9 solvent. after about 15 passes with a cleaning rod and patches i ran out of the solvent the patches kept coming out bluish/black, what eles could i use to clean the barrel?

also the hood around the front sight is crooked, possibly through it being banged up during packaging how can it stright it out and what is its purpose?

any answers espcially from thoose who own this gun would help.

You can hold the trigger while closing the bolt and it will not cock it. Dont really know bout the cosmoline smell but if you clean the stock really well with oven cleaner the smell should be mostly gone. Maybe you could get ya a brass bush to scrub the bore with and that should help. you could also plug the muzzle end of the barrel and fill it with solvent and let it sit overnight and then see what happens after that. And the sight hood is basically there to protect the front sight blade from any damage and also to help see it better when the sun hits it just right.

Try some foaming bore cleaner, sounds like you might have a lot of copper fouling. I wouldn't worry about getting it absolutely clean. Sometimes they clean up better after shooting them for a while. I get the barrel nice and hot at the range and then clean it while it's still hot.

I found that split ring pliers are the best thing to get the sight hood off.

It takes a little work to get the cosmo out the wood on the stock. Try paint thinner or denatured alcohol and a Scotch Brite pad and nylon brush. Use a pan to catch the solvent and use lots of the solvent as it gets dirty very quickly. You can also try putting out in the sun.

Another way to really clean the barrel is brake cleaner. Completely remove the barrel from the stock, wrap teflon tape around a pencil eraser and shove it in one end of the barrel, fill the barrel with the brake cleaner and let it sit for several hours, scrub with a brush and repeat.
