Mosin 45-70 ?

I did not watch the video, but I know the mag is the most annoying part. You have to relieve quite a bit of the receiver as well. I looked into doing a .500 S&W conversion (the bolt works wonderfully with it), I just need a beat mosin. All mine have nice bores and I don't want to cut them up.

That's pretty slick. But I just can't help thinking that unless a guy is doing this for himself that it's going to cost a pretty big penny to get something like that done. And then what's the point when there's lots of other calibers and options for delivering them which don't come with a custom price tag?

Doing something like this is rarely "cost effective" but as for the fun of building something interesting it is a bargain.

I have toyed with the idea of building a 348 Winchester or 405 Winchester on a Mosin, but the long term cost of feeding it keeps bring me back to the 45/70...

Any other rim cartridges suggestion?

that's interesting, I have heard a lot that the MN action wasn't strong enough to handle a conversion to 45/70...which I always thought was strange since 45/70 should be lower pressure than 7.62x54r

I think the 375 Nitro Express (2.5" rimmed, straight case) would be cool except cases are a bear. Either have to reform 405s or pay extremities for crappy Bertrams.

Back when this ammo was available SMLEs were sometimes converted for tiger hunting in India.

This looks like a lot of fun. When the mustchio'd one touched off those rounds it pushed him back a fair bit.

I remember somewhere long ago seeing a little comic strip of a carbine toting cavalryman circa 1880 firing from prone and leaving little trenches in the sand from his elbows where the cartridge pushed him backwards from the recoil. I giggled at that.
