Rather than revive my Mosin Rescue thread I thought I'd post this pic here. This is the best picture I've managed to take of the muzzle of the M28 discussed in the previously mentioned thread. It looks like someone bored the end of the muzzle about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch into the rifling. I can't imagine why. If I understand counterboring correctly there should still be rifling to the end of the barrel. So far my best theory is that the guy I got the rifle from was trying to remove rust with a power drill.

For experimenting purposes I reassembled the rifle using parts from my M44 to complete it and fired it in my back yard range. At 25 yards it seemed to shoot ok (5 inch square target) but I didn't do enough experimenting to get any longer range results.

Any thoughts........suggestions......expert opinions....?????????

Very common procedure when re-arseneling Mosins. The counterbore removes area usually damaged by cleaning rods and restores accuracy. Jim.

I guess my understanding of counterboring was mistaken. Just shows to go ya...you learn something new every day.
I hope to clean this rifle up as nice as the ones you pictured....Got a long way to go though. In a way it being covered with shelac was a good thing. It kept it from rusting further......
