Mosin Nagant Scout

My tax refund purchase of a M38 Mosin Nagant made it possible (read bearable) to convert my Romanian M44 Mosin into a scout rifle. Scope and mount from CDNN. Advanced Technologies MonteCarlo Stock from Sportsmans Guide. A little Cut and crown work from local gunsmith. and Voila!

The cut and crown work was needed after removing the frontsight/bayonet assembly. This left an unsightly stepdown on the front of the barrel (about 3 3/4 inch) that was not blued. I chose to cut it off. this left me with a 16 1/4 inch barrel. I believe I'll name this rifle SuperNova in honor of the muzzle flash.

Test firing.

It took about 20 rounds to get on paper with the scope. It shot 24" high and 7" right to begin with. I've still got some fine tuning to do, but I shot this 4 round group with my last 4 rounds today at 50 yds. Not bad for a 16 1/4 inch barrel.

is that one of the water damaged m38's?? hardly looks damaged to me, what was wrong with it?

Yes it was one of the water damaged ones. It showed having a patch of rust on the flat part of the safety catch on the bolt. The rest of the rifle is very good. AIM really did me good on this one. The parts are matching numbers and it has the M38 stock instead of a M44. I was going to order a second but they ran out.

Supernova, good choice in names. So your eye protection will have both impact and UV protection

Have you played with the trigger at all?

I did a little work to mine and smoothed it up a whole bunch.
BTW, mine is an Izzy made M44 from 1944.

No trigger work at all. This one is crisp and breaks at about 4 lbs. I wouldn't change it at all. My M-38 is a little sloppy. I may work on it later.
