Is there any difference in length between the Mosin Nagant carbines (38, 44, 91-59)? I would like to pick one up at an upcoming gun show, but would like to get the shortest one. Thanks for any info.

I think the 38 and 44 both have a 20" barrel. The big difference is that the 38 did not have a bayonet issued and the 44 has a permanently affixed folding bayonet.

Check this link out for information: http://www.surplusrifle.com/carbinenagant/index.asp and this Forum:

I just picked up a 91/30 for $79 from Big 5 Sporting Goods. The carbines are the same price when they go on sale. From what I have heard, the carbines have a pretty good kick to them and the 44 is probably the most punishing of all of the Russian WWII rifles.

Lots of good information on the M-N Forum, especially on what to look for in a good carbine or long rifle!! According to some owners of the 91/30, it is easily capable of 3" groups at 200 yards.

The 44 might be 1/4" longer but this does not really matter. The 38 is the most handy because it does not have the heavy bayonet attached to the barrel. The bayonet is cool though. Handle both and pick the one that you like the best.

The 91-59 is supposed to be the most inherently accurate. They are made from cut down 91-30s. I haven't had a chance to shoot mine yet but the other two are a blast (literally :D ) to shoot. You really can't go too wrong with any of them, however the M44 does come with a kickstand though ;) .

I have M44, M38, and 91/59. I don't think any of this is inherently more accurate than others.

The M38, and 91/59 are very handy. Mines have great triggers on them. The M44 is also good. However, the bayonet makes it a bit more front heavy.

I would have buy more, but my wife thought that I'm crazy having several guns which look the same... She thought that I am building an army or something.... ;)

Yes, the M44 has a nice kick to it, kind of like a spicy enchilada. Never have owned the others, so I cannot say, but I do have a 91/30 that is actually not too bad to shoot...Im 6'5" or so and 300 lbs, so I am a big ol boy too.

The bayo is about useless, except for using it to keep your rifle out of the mud when you need your hands free ;)

I think you will enjoy any of them.

They are all the same length. The '44 has the added weight of the bayo out front, the '38s are more rough in quality, in most cases, the 91/59 is the best of the bunch. I wouldn't turn down a M38 in nice condition though.

Check the bore, crown and throat!

Thanks for all the comments. I've been trying to track one down locally, but have only found one store that has them. They want $150 for the 44 & 38. I think I'll wait till next weekends show & see if I can get a better price. I was hoping to find one under $100. Might pick up an SKS also.

Right now, you should not pay over $100 for a M38 or M44 (unless you find a rare variation like a hex receiver or 1943 M44). The M91/59 however would be difficult to find under $130. Grab it up if you find one.

Aztec for M38 and M44

For what it's worth, two buddies and I each picked up an M38 from Aztec for $49 + S&H. I paid an extra $10 to get the M38 stock - i.e. no bayonet groove (many M38s were made having M44 stocks later in their manufacturing cycle, I believe).

Cheers!
