Hi, Everyone! I've been poking around the boards for some time, now. When I frequently have gun questions, even before I became a member, I came here looking for answers, so I'm hoping the good folks here might be able to come up with another gem of wisdom. I recently purchased a Mosin Nagant 91 30, and I'm looking to put a PE (top mounted) scope mount on it. The problem is, I cannot find a single gunsmith in my area, which is Southeastern Virginia, by the way, who will touch the job. They all claim either, "We don't do metric [bolts/screws/drills/taps, etc...] or "We don't work on Milsurp stuff. It's too hard." Or some variant, thereof. I've about exhausted the list of gunsmiths I can come up with here, and I was wondering if anyone know of or could vouch for someone who could professionally mount the PE mount to my rifle? I'd rather avoid having to ship the receiver/barrel across the country b/c it seems prohibitively expensive, but I'm getting desperate, here. I sure as Hel don't have the expertise or tools to attempt it myself, so I suppose the closer I can get to my general geographic area, the better. With that said, I'm loathe to trust my "Anastasyah" to anyone less than an expert, under any conditions. Thanks to you all for all your advice you've given me in the past, and perhaps, future!

Jack

There's a guy on Gunboards.com who's well recommended. I don't recall his name offhand, but if you ask in the Sniper Rifle forum there, they'll give you his contact info.

Don't work with metric taps/dies? LOL those are pretty poor excuses for machinists in your area! Everything is metric these days. American firearms seem to be the only holdout.

Don't have a machinist buddy that can do such work for you? You might have to go outside the normal circle, as it were. Ask around for regular machinists, one might do the work for you on a cash-no receipt basis.

If you are interested in a Long Eye Relief scope check out Darrell's Scout Mount , I have the mount and I purchased a Simmons LER scope that I’m not too happy with, the mount is great and very easy to install but scope sucks...

As suggest check with local machine shops, All that job really requires tool wise is a good quality drill press. If you wanna send your gun out here to hawaii, there is a VERY good gunsmith that i take all the work i cant do to.

Well, I just got home and found an email in my inbox from a gunsmith who just got back to me, and it seems that he can perform the job, he says, and he's only about an hour away. Hopefully, this works out for the best. He says he's never seen a PE mount before, but according to him, he has the drill and taps for the job, so I think this should work. Thanks for the advice, everyone!
