Cosmoline,

Congratulations on the 1970 find!

By the way, about where is the balance point on your rifle, with that scope mount and scope?

Thanks.

This is my B-Barrel with a Weaver 4X LER scope. I really, really like this rifle. It is heavy, no doubt, but I'm a big guy (6'1", 190#) and can handle it. This was basically a U-fix-em that I got from WG&A, and I cobbled the parts together. The metal (barrel, receiver) was in new condition, but I needed to find a new stock. Worked out well in the end.

To answer someone's question, if I place my hand directly in front of the magazine floor plate, so my pinky is touching the front of the magazine base plate, it balances when I hold it right there.

Steve--Balance point with the military stock in place is right at the finger grooves in front of the magazine. With the sporter stock it's a little bit further towards the barrel.

Geojap--that's a keeper. Re. the weight, it reminds me of that line from the 13th Warrior

Arab--"I cannot carry this!" (lifting huge Viking sword)

Viking--"Grow stronger"

I actually do a workout routine with my M-39 to help bolster off-hand shooting muscles. Ten pounds of steel and birchwood would make a fearsome close combat weapon, that's for sure. Those Finns were tough customers.

Very nice project. I have a shooter grade antique from WGA, I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for the idea and link. :)

I got my 1970 from WGA. They're going to be my M-39 source from now on. One big plus is all their M-39's are legal antiques, so there's a lot less paperwork to fuss with.

I hope WG&A can get over their legal problems. I don't see how they will be able to stay in business if they can't sell anything requiring an FFL. They do not have a good shot at being a long term source for M-39's right now.

MN 91/59, 91/30 option

If you have one of these (all M1891/59 that I know of, most if not all 91/30 from what I hear). there is another option.

The BKL mount can replace the entire rear sight, which is easily (in most cases) removed by drifting out two pins. This leaves you with nice dovetails on the barrel. This setup gets the scope LOWER than the blade scope mount replacement by Darrell (nothing wrong with his mount, just sharing another option).

It's a little more work, but still reversible unless your sight block pins are too tight. The lower sight line is the trade off for more work (plus they're a bit cheaper).

What happend with WGA and the ATF? I've only heard bits and pieces.

Apparently they have had some problems related to kits for machine guns that they sold many years ago - so says the rumor, but I can't verify its truth. Anyhow, ATF came in a few weeks ago and shut them down. I had a deposit there for an antique no-name, no-date M-39, and it was returned to me because they don't know when they'll be able to sell it. Now, however, you can see some antiques on their website that it is OK for them to sell. I don't know if these are newly-acquired guns, or if they are guns that ATF has released from the ban on sales.

One big plus is all their M-39's are legal antiques, so there's a lot less paperwork to fuss with.

Not true. That's what you see on the website now; before the ATF problems, most of the rifles were post-1898 and required either a C&R or an FFL. I have an 1898 Tula made by VKT, but I had to wait to find an antique at a decent price. The non-antiques are less expensive, because you have to fill out the 4473 or provide the C&R - i.e. the privacy is worth something.

Thanks for the info. I haven't encountered their site before so I assumed they were just selling antiques. At any rate, compared with Gunsamerica and the local shops, the prices on their antiques are very good. I've seen some posts around complaining about pitting on their rifles, though of course cleaned up but pitted metal is a common sight on Finnish Mosins. I'll post a report when "That 70's Mosin" gets here.

Just for the record, I feel that the weight of an M-39 is just right. The weight causes the rifle to almost float with its sights set right on the target. It also turns the recoil of a powerful round into a gentle nudge on the shoulder.
I am 5'10", 190ish and kind of chunky, and it is perfect for me.
I would buy it if I didn't already have one, another two guns on layaway, and still more accessories and reloading stuff on my wish list.
And not enough overtime.
Good luck.

On that photo looking out the window, were you waiting for a Hitlerite facist sniper who invaded our Holy Mother Russia to appear? :p

To paraphrase Bogart, there are certain sections of Spenard that I wouldn't advise them to invade.

No, I'm actually aiming at blue sky there, towards Cook Inlet. It just looks like I'm aiming at a roof top.
