I got a Mosin Nagant a little while back and recently took it to the range. Long story short, it was great.
So great, in fact that I decided to get another one.
I live in No-Guns-California and I'm still waiting for the 10 day waiting period to expire but when it finally arrives, I intend to upgrade it with a monte carlo stock, mount and scope.
I have 2 questions:
(1) Are there any reliable mounts out there for short eye-relief scopes that
don't involve any permanent alterations (ie drilling) to the rifle?
(2) I would like to vary my ammo stockpile by buying some steel core ammo.
I'm right now eyeing some Bulgarian and Hungarian stuff. http://www.jgsales.com/product_info...ase,-300-rd-tin-/cPath/12_42/products_id/1692

Are these loads reliable? Are there any brands out there that you can
recommend?

I can answer the first question pretty certainly. I bought one of the mounts that goes on in place of the rear sight. Man, is it junk. I could POSSIBLY get it stable if I loctited a few of the screws. But I'm not sure if I want to do that... I might just put the iron sight back on and put the LER scope on my SKS. The only really reliable way to get optics on your MN is to drill and tap for the ATI conversion.

I bought a 300-pack of the Bulgarian shot but haven't shot it yet. All of that ammo is going to be reliable; the question will be finding a load that your rifle really likes. Be aware, though, that shooting any milsurp is going to leave lots of nasty crap in the barrel, so you'll need to be diligent about cleaning with Windex. Hopefully someone can provide a link with a how-to.

I bought the M91/30 sniper rifle. Why reengineer the wheel?

"...buying some steel core ammo..." Why? Most ranges won't let you shoot it.
"...cleaning with Windex..." Hot water works just as well for cleaning out the salts from corrosive primers. Windex doesn't really have anything in it that matters. The ammonia doesn't do anything for the salts. Dump a quart(use a funnel with a flex tube) or so of very hot water through the barrel then clean as per normal.
"...short eye-relief scopes..." A short eye relief scope will give you 'Weatherby eye brow' from the recoil. Likely needing stitches. Mind you, other than the specially made sniper rifles, Moisins weren't made to have scopes. Like Shade00 says, no gunsmithing mounts rarely work well anyway.

I know of two or three companies that make scope mounts for scopes other than long eye reliefe. All of these mounts (including the original sniper scope mounts) require drilling and tapping. As long as you are going to convert the rifle to sporting use, why not drill and tap to mount a scope? It is pretty easy to do with a drill press.

I had one with the scope mount that replaced the rear sight, and it was very solid. You HAVE to loctite it in place, but that was the only stipulation. It was very rigid. Scoped, I got golfball sized 10 shot groups at 100yds, which is plenty good for a deer rifle.

I shot mostly corrosive blue box stuff, cleaned afterwards, and had no complaints.

Why not drill and add a PU scope mount? Not much chance of ruining the value of that $100 rifle. I did the sniper clone thing with mine and love it.

"...buying some steel core ammo..." Why? Most ranges won't let you shoot it.

Don't attempt to answer a question with a question. If he wants steel core ammo, you telling him that most ranges won't let him shoot doesn't help. Maybe his range lets him shoot it, maybe he doesn't even go to a range to shoot. Forums are intended to help people.

As for the OP:

Steel core ammo is out there. Shouldn't be hard to find at all really. Theres a huge list here of all kinds. http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo.htm

or if you want, next time you're at a gun show take a small magnet to the tip of a 54R bullet. That'd tell you as well. You might look weird doing it, but oh well.

For the scope issue:

Everyone else pretty much covered it. You can scope a mosin, but usually it isn't very sturdy. With enough work it could turn out as you want.

I've heard one can put a scout scope on a Mosy without as much drilling. True or not?

There are several companies that make the long eye relief scout scopes for the Mosin. The cheap ones you see are junk, and are most likely what Shade00 got. Those cheap ones are made of aluminum and strip very easily. Do not buy those!

Get the one from Darrels Scout Mounts They are highly respected in the surplus community. The mounts are steel and very well built, and not too horrible on the wallet at $75 shipped. They are rock solid and will not give you a lick of problems.

For Scope mount I have a Darrell Scout-Style which works really well. As for the the Hungarian SYT, they are reliable and seemed to kick more than the others. They also tend to cause sticky bolt (hot heavy load?). The best milsurp ammo I've used in my Mosins is the Polish Light Balls, so if you chance on some, get it.

That's the one we're talking about. You drive out the pin that holds the rear sight in, set the base in, and insert screws through the pin holes into the mount. It will see-saw back and forth. Then there's a screw in front of and behind the two you put in, which push down against the reciever to stabilize it.

If you skip the loctite step, you'll notice your groups opwning up... because your mount is loose.

Scoped 91/30

I put a 6-18x54mm Bushnell that ran 120 bucks from Wally world. Uses the ATI mount which requires 2 screws, and is as solid as the day is long. My groups aren't down to golf ball size, but not much more than a hardball.

I bought a bunch of the steel core surplus ammo and shot some out of my m44. Huge muzzle flash. I hung a target on a Kevlar board in front of a 2 foot thick tree. The round went through the Kevlar and then went through the tree!
I liked it a lot.

The ONLY reliable mount I've ever found for a Mosin Nagant is Rock Solid Industries.

But you have to drill and tap. Sorry ;p

Once in a while on E-bay there is a guy that sells a no gunsmith see-though scope mount that lets you mount a standard scope or a scout set up. I have done three ATI mounts and bolt handles. I put the bolt handles on with J-B weld and lock tight they are solid but IMO they don't look very good. Jim the boltman makes a nice bent bolt handle for the ATI mount.

I have two Mosin Nagant's with Darrel scout mounts they are both solid and have worked out well.

A lot of Mosin Nagant's aren't very accurate with ATI stocks until you releave the stock at the barrel.

My 91/30s Finn M39 also like the cork at the end of th barrel. They also hold zero better as they heat up with the cork.

Atla, thanks for that steer! That mount looks awesome. Kinda pricey, but by far the most impressive mount I've ever seen for the M-N.

esmith,

The thing is, 7.62x54R jackets are usually steel too, so the magnet is going to stick no matter what.

I agree with previous posters in that pretty much all the surplus ammo will be reliable. As for what I recommend, I recommend what shoots well in your rifle. ;)

No, it is not. Here is the guy to go to for LER mounts on a Mosin. His name is Darrell and I've bought several of his mounts. They're milled from solid aluminum and are very stout:

The only trouble I had with mine was trying to fit a 91/30 mount on a Finn M-30 with a very odd base, and I fixed that problem.

You can drill and tap a receiver mount and bend down the bolt handle, but what's the point? You can just buy a Savage with the mount already made and everything set up to shoot scoped.
