Mosin Nagant Recoil

I just took my M44 to the range yesterday. The recoil wasn't bad. I remember when I first shot it, it was barely tolerable. But now, it's not so bad. I've never used a limbsaver or recoil pad or anything like that. I haven't noticed any huge ergonomic problems with any of my rifles. I mean, when I'm shooting, I'm not thinking "Golly, the ergonomics of this stock really suck!" I dunno. Maybe I'm a recoil junkie! :D

Oh, and around when I first shot my SKS, I thought it had a lot of kick. Not so anymore, and that's been a couple of years.

PS I'll venture a guess that most of you guys are used to shooting AR-15s and the like. Two of the three rifles I own are knockaround, crude Soviet rifles. SKS and Mosin. Those are what I've shot most. Maybe I'm just used to it.

Nagant's arn't bad, i enjoy all of mine. the carbnes are worse than the 91/30 types but all are ok. Now my MkV enfield with full loads is another story.

nagants arnt bad. the recoil is nothing i feel my k31 recoils worse than my 91/30. the T-53's are the best of both worlds. nice trigger break and m44 weight

Started out on 8mm, 7.62x54r isn't too bad for me, but I'm a big guy. Long shooting sessions I'll throw on one of the Pachmeyer recoil pads, but if I'm only throwing about 40-70 rounds down range I go as is.

I love shooting my M38, M44, K31. I haven't shot my 91/30 yet. Been working too many hours.

Then I go to my AR-15 and it feels like I'm shooting a BB gun. LOL.

SKS's are really fun to shoot also.

don't use a limbsaver or any pad like that unless you have medical reasons. after some time you learn how to shoot it without getting whumped.

Here are some pics of me shooting my T53 from Omega at Desert Marksman in Palmdale, CA. I was the only human for miles around.

the way you hold the gun, btw, is to put the butt a little on your pectoral muscle. and you need to learn where to stress your muscles and where to relax them. this comes with practice.

by the way, i can easily hit water jugs at 75 yards standing up shooting offhand with no sling. nothing to brag about, but good enough in my book.

recoil

I own both , the 91/30 and the M44, and I can tell you that they both kick very hard, and the muzzle flash is , to me, greater on the M44. You can buy a muzzle brake and that will calm down both the recoil and the muzzle flash, but be sure to check and make sure that the muzzle brake is tight after every 2-3 shots. I have shot one off before.
Also, don't listen to anyone that says the recoil "ain't bad"
Right, it is bad and you need to know that before setting one off. I love shooting mine, but not a whole lot at one time.

Maybe mine is special, but you should be able to hit that coke can with an SKS. I would still buy a m44 if I had the chance though. They are just so fun to shoot. That and the guy next to you with his AR will gaze in terror at your muzzle flash:D

The worst is when your M44 gives you a big bruise on your shoulder, then you can't wear your new strapless dress to your sweet sixteen party.

I took one look at the steel butt plate on my M44, and decided to get a Pachmayr limb pad. Haven't shot it without and don't plan on it. Seems there are people here who enjoy the "true experience", as it was back in the day, and power to 'em. With the pad, though, I'd say the recoil is pretty comparable to that of my 30-06, which aint so bad. Pretty enjoyable, really. Think I'm ready for the .460 Wby. Mag. ;)

I can shoot it all day without a problem IF I'm standing. Shooting prone is a whole nother matter.

Recoil M44 = hit by 56 Buick Roadmaster in shoulder at 60 mph. M 91/30 = hit by Yugo at 11.7 mph in shoulder, with light ball ammo. Experience of shooting them = hit by Jennifer Anniston's underwear in motel room.

The lousy stock shape is 90% of the problem, plus the fact that the steel buttplate is not t-shirt friendly. Pick up one of the ATI fiberglass stocks. It requires no alteration to the gun. It has a more conventional shape and a smallish built-in recoil pad. I shoot a rifle more across my body than most, and seat the stock a bit further out my arm than most as a result. I have shot 40-60 rounds of Czech light ball with no after effects at all

nice thing about the mosin, if you get tired of shooting it you can use it as a bat.club, boat oar, tent stake, firewood,,,etc

OK everybody, lets get real. Most of us Americans are a little bit bigger than the Czar's peasants. Nutrition did not improve size during Uncle Joe's years either. Plus the comments about shooting in T-shirts are correct.

Yes, they are uncomfortable to some of us big guys. However, a lot of little guys shot those same rifles to good effect.

You would notice similar difficulties in shooting late 19th century rifles from anywhere in the world.

Get an M44 muzzle break and there goes 40-50% of the recoil. Add a slip on recoil pad and all that's left will be a BIG BOOM and quick muzzle flash that looks like a 20mm cannon! My handloads using 49gr of Varget and a 150gr SP really thump out of this setup. My 30-06 recoils more now.

recoil, schmeecoil, these things are pussy cats. Go try a 460 Weatherby or a 570 Nitro Express then tell me what you think

I think it all depends on what you are used to.

In Indiana we can't use rifles for deer - have to use slug guns. My first slug gun was a smoothbore 20 gauge. After using that for a couple years I got a 12 gauge.

Those were both very good shoulder conditioners, and the M44 doesn't bother me unless I shoot around 100 rounds.

If you grew up shooting the .223 to .30-30, the 7.62x54R will thump you some.

I prefer the longer 91/30. Mine from Ishevsk arsenal 1936 will group at just under 2" at 100 yards using polish light ball.

My big issue isn't recoil but the cosmoline which keeps oozing out of the stock. Yecch.

Off the bench, I use a sissy bag (shot bag full of sand) between the butt and my shoulder. Tames even the hardest kickers. Offhand, no problems. I seldom practice from any other position.
