I've been trying to find a Mosin Nagant "bolt on" or "clamp on" scope mount that will leave my gun in original configuration, and allow me to keep the iron sights as backup.

I have a turn down bolt handled rifle already. I just need the scope mount. Something that will allow me to attach a simple either 4x Tasco, or Simmons scope or a Bushnell 3-9x40mm.

I haven't been able to find anything that wasn't either a drill/tap system, or a scope mount setup (which I do not want). Anyway, any help or ideas you have would be much appreciated.

Basically you have two choices.

1-- For a standard rifle scope setup, there are only the drill tap setups available so far. There aren't any non gunsmith versions yet. Sorry--

2-- For a scout setup (where they use the long eye relief scopes or pistol scopes) you can find the non-drill/tap setups. If you are going that route, then Darrels Scout Mount is what you want. Very nice quality, heavy duty, and not too terribly expensive

Another option you may consider is turning it into a sniper clone, using a PU mount. You can get the mounts and scope for around $200 total and add it to your 91/30 to make a look alike sniper. You already have the turned down bolt handle, so thats one less step in the conversion. It obviously will not be authentic, but will look almost identical. Accumounts makes a really nice PU mount

The sniper config alter (atleast the way I understand it) involves having the rifle get drilled and tapped on the side of the reciever. Also, if I am not mistaken, only the PU scope would work in it, because there aren't standard 1" or 2" rings.

Yes the sniper clone would require drilling and tapping the side of your receiver. If you are absolutely against D/T your only option is the scout scope setup.

To answer your other question there are companies making inserts for using 1" scopes in the 26.5mm russian repro, accumounts being one of them.

Another option are the S&K mounts. I just put one on my M38 and it is SOLID. It was easy to install, but I had to do a bit of grinding on the mount (not the rifle) using a Dremel tool - no big deal. I've heard good things about Darrel's Scout Mounts as well. I've not heard anything good about any of the other scout mounts.

Okay, well, would the drill/tap be the side of the rifle (the other side of the reciever, oposite where the bolt is manipulated from), or the top?

Also, I'm not entirely against setting up some kind of East Bloc scope mount on the side which would require altering the stock (or, an alternate stock) Do you know of anything of that nature?

Yes I know a bit because I am in the process of restoring my ex-PU back to sniper status. There are two types of mounts you can use to create a sniper clone.

1- The PU is a side mount, that requires the mount to be drilled and tapped on the left side of the receiver, opposite of the bolt handle. It is the scope setup you see above. It does require inletting the stock a bit on the left side.

2-- The PE mount has a mount that attaches (drill/tap) to the top of the receiver. MUCH more difficult to drill/tap, as the screws cannot go all the way through the chamber where they are, they need to be blind holes. No stock inletting neccessary.

Accumounts makes a really top notch repro of either of the mount setups-

My reccomendation is the PU setup. For about $200 you can get the mount plus scope, add in another $50 or so for a gunsmith to drill/tap it in place, and you will have an accurate looking russian sniper clone, looking like it came straight from Stalingrad.

Another argument for creating a sniper clone versus using a commercial scope mount is that you will keep all the value of the parts you put in.

In other words once it is all said and done, you will still be able to sell that Mosin that has been turned into a sniper clone for $300-400 (the sum of the parts you put into it).

A mosin that has just a commercial scope mount drill/tapped, you will take a hit on value. As in, you would probably only get $50-75 or so for it.

Just my 2 cents, although I think you most likely know where I tend to lean on this thought process :)

Another source besides Accumounts is the good ole Ebay. Just run a search under Mosin mount.

TIMC,
What's that muzzle attachment on your PU?

It is a Krinkov muzzle brake, One of those just for grins things. I threadded the barrel and installed it myself using the barrel threadding kit I bought for my AK, it came out nice and it actually does semm to help a little with recoil and muzzle flip.
