I don't know what the official use (if any) for the egg shaped opening on the mosin nagant combo tool is, but I found that it makes deploying and removing a tight fitting bayonet on a 91/30 a little easier. The wide end rests on the bit of the muzzle protruding past the bayonet while the narrow end of the tool opening catches the base of the spike. It gives a little more leverage, but trying to push in the locking lug and stabilize the rifle while turning the bayonet is challenging, plus not cutting yourself on the screwdriver! Guess they wore gloves or had tough hands.

Anyone else discovered this or is this old news?

It's a 'multi-tool' for the MN. Screwdriver, firing pin go-no go gauge, finger nail cleaner.

Right, Ive used it for all of the above, but I can't think of any other reason for the looped handle. Kinda looks like a larger take-down tool for a 1911.

It's also called a "bolt tool" sometimes due to the go/no-go slots.

DMK has put forth the most believable theory I've seen thus far for its shape. :D

I'd imagine making a wider handle with less material would have been a good reason, especially with how many of 'em they made! Plus it uses up less space than the old style one.

Also, you can attach it to something so you don't lose it.

Oh, and you can put something through it to get some leverage too.

sorta related: Can someone explain the stuff in the stoc of the SKS? Does the metal cylinder do anything and what's with the rod with the spiral cut down it?

I find the mosin screwdriver very easy to sharpen and might come very useful when it is necessary to punch your captors in the eye

And I store my anti-corrosive ammo cleaning fluid in the oil bottle :p

pdowg
you're looking at a brush, cleaning jag, and punch for your firing pin
the cylinder is just a container

the SKS kits cap is a muzzle protector the cleaning rod goes through the hole in the side of the tube to form a handle the sprial ya refer to is the jag for the end of the cleaning rod, there should also be a piece that looks like a punch it isn't its for cleaning the gas port in the barrel...... when issued the SKS was also accompanied by a chunk of course twine that was to be wrapped around the jag from the end towards the rod just two revolutions this acted as a patch......

The Mosin tool was originally placed on a lanyard by most soldiers rather than it getting lost as it was the only tool needed to toatally disassemble a Mosin nagant ya place the bayo through the hole for leverage while removing the action screws...... with the M38 (no bayo) and the M44 (fixed bayo) this left the soldier needing either very strong fingers or use another item for leverage

Explain the sks twine thing to me a little differently. I can't picture it and now that I know what it is it's bugging me.

The egg shaped hole is explicitly for twisting off your bayonet, took me forever but it fits perfectly over the crucifix bayo base so you can twist it, so you figured it out perfectly.

Sounds like the Mosin tool could have been made for all of those uses and reasons.

My Norinco SKS has the rubber pad and I got my finger stuck in that Chinese finger trap. The tool capsule was pushing against my finger and the trap door was closing on it! I had to unscrew the buttplate to get my finger out. Ouch!

It's

One part Smirnoff
One part Hertekamp
One half part gunpowder tea
One half part true mead (the cosmoline)

For a Finnish Mosin Screwdriver add Lapponia Cloudberry

so in the idea of using a gun tool as a bottel opener. i opened a beer with a 1911 bushing wrench today. and its become my new, dual task keychain

dumdum, the rubber butpad is not an original feature of the SKS for any country except the Yugo 59/66 because of grenade launching without it ya can easily remove the cleaning kit by depressing the door from the side opposit the hinge ya might try useing your cleaning rod as a substitute for the finger :)
