Mosin Questions

Welcome to THR, ledheplin.

IMO, the mount is a bit clunky, but the Mosin is tough to mount a stable scope assembly on and it does appear fairly solid. The bolt of course is required to clear the machined mount.
I'm guessing that you need to drill and tap the receiver to fit this mount and it's likely that you'll need to check the headspace with a new bolt body.

The headspace is a non-issue, as the bolt face is a seperate piece. That's the coolest thing (mechanically) about the Mosin as relates to sporterizing. I welded a Remington 700 bolt handle onto mine, and the welding heat causes no problems with the bolt face/lug heat treatment when you disassemble the bolt first.

I wasn't really worried about the head space and I'v heard some very good reviews but have any of you had experience with this mount?

Not personalty, I have handled a rifle with one of those on it and found it to be very very solid. It attaches with a bolt at the rear as well as the ones in front so its more stable then the ati type mount.

Bought my first Mosin today at a gun show, and like any normal person, as soon as I got home I jumped on the interwebs and did a bunch of searches for stampings and serial numbers. Turns out it's a refurbed Izhevsk. I found most of the markings online but there are a few I'm still looking for, and maybe someone can point me in the right direction. On the barrel under the serial number is a little triangle with a number twelve in it. There are a few stamps that are square with a little squared upside down "U" in it (I assume it's a cyrillic letter) and after the date is what looks like a lower case "R".
Any insight? Thanks.

I like the "scout rifle" style scope mount on the mosin. It doesn't require any permanent modifications so when I come across a better rifle I can easily swap it around. Plus the bolt handle can be left alone. I don't know why but I really like the bolt sticking straight out the side like it does.

That and the ATI kit that is similar are frequently referred to as Rape Your Rifle Kits, because while it will work, it's ugly and crude. Better to use a less invasive and less expensive method if any to modify your rifle.

ShawnC, that "r" is IIRC an abbreviation for "the year of our lord" or something to that effect.

The triangle 12 is unknown. A lot of the little marks are just various proofing stamps who's meaning has been long lost.
