I got an email from Classic Arms claiming that the supply of Mosin Nagant 91/30s in Russia is about to be exhausted. Is this true or is this a used car salesman email? Is Classic Firearms (http://www.classicfirearms.com) good to do business with? My only concern is that

I have wanted one for a while but figured I could wait a little longer before buying one. Presently, they are going for $75 ex-shipping and FFL Fees.

Also, if I go hand select, what should I ask for if I want a good shooter?

It's (mostly) a used car salesman email. The supply WILL dry up, but they made so many of those rifles that there are still warehouses full of them I'm fairly certain.

They are slow to sell as they are not that pretty to most. But it will soon dry up like the rest of them. But always on the sale at gunbroker.com

The original supply will take decades to be exhausted. Then will come imitations and tribute rifles. In 2161, there will still be 'I <3 my Mosin-Nagant M91/30' threads.

As far as handpick, about all you can request is all matching numbers and no counterbore.

If you want one might as well pick one up who knows when the supply may dry up, but it eventually will and they may not be as cheap afterwards, even though there is alot of them.

Thanks for the advice. I am slightly partial to the Mosin, Not as pretty as a Mauser but my Great Grandfather presumably carried one while in the Czar's army during Russo-Japanese war of 1905. Good to know its probably a used car salesman email and I can hold off a little bit.

They made about 37 million of them so id be very suprised if they are starting to dry up.

I think everyone should have a few! Someday they will all be bubbafied all to crap and they may be worth $200 or more in good condition ;)

The Kraig rifles were once in the same boat that the Nagant is currently in. My dad said you could buy as many good ones as you wanted for under $20. Find a Kraig good shape now for the price of a Mosin-Nagant....

That isn't a good comparison.

There were only about 500,000 Krag rifles made for the U.S.

There were something like 40,000,000  Mosin–Nagant rifles made.

40,000,000>500,000.

Sorta sound like a mixture of 70s, 80s and 90s rolled into one. Good music!

Soviet 91/30's? Hardly. We barely tapped part of the backstock out of one former SSR at this point.

But *some* Mosins have already run dry at the importers. I believe almost all the Finnish Mosins are in secondary and tertiary markets now, though you sometimes see little batches from Finland such as the 28/76 target rifles.

yeah the mosin supply will run out in russia when they finally decide that the 90+ year old ww2 vet homeguard reserve battalions are no longer needed to defend the motherland from the nasty Nato forces :neener:

This is a VERY accurate statement. All the Mosins that were once in Russia, are now in the United States!:D

Seriously, there were somewhere on the order of 17 million built. The supply will never dry up, only be relocated.

Here's my take....

Yes Millions were made However:
1. You must assume some were destroyed, used up, etc in WW2.
2. They quit making the 91/30 in Russia by the end of WW2 I believe (Switched to M44).
3. Not all of them will be imported.
4. Some are distributed around the world in subsequent soviet sponsored conflicts, etc.
5. Some are in former soviet countries which through govt. relations, treaties, etc. are not able to be exported.

Yes there are some number, likely in the Millions of them on the commercial market, but the quantity is not in-exhaustible. 100.00 Retail, is a “dumping” price. Once there is enough question about supply the price will double in my opinion. The giant question is, when is that and how many people bought multiples betting on that, and at what price will they sell (Secondary Market). If the price goes up to say, 200.00 /rifle retail (Assume 100.00 wholesale) would that be enough to entice another former soviet country to empty its warehouses? AND due to the large number imported already would that price be sustainable?

At the typical current price 100.00 +/- if any of that makes you want to go get one, now’s the time. I don’t think the price will be lower. This price may hold for years, but the minute supply slows, the price will go up.

I went to Classic Arms site and the only mentioned the supply of laminated stock Mosins as drying up.

Also, I was incorrect about the number of Mosin's produced, it's approximately 37 million. Rest easy. They were cheap 10 years ago and they're still cheap now unlike other milsurps whose supply really is drying up.

There are allot of these rifles still in use today in the Middle East. They are all over the sandbox.

The devil is in the details. An enormous number of Soviet 91/30's were made, but even among these some are rare birds. The ones made at Tula as the Germans closed in for example. And of course there are many different kinds. The M91's, which were also made by the million, are full of rarities and so many have been hacked by Bubba over the years that intact ones, particularly from the US arsenals, are commanding a really surprising premium. Assumption is a risk with these rifles. Knowledge is power. And thankfully there are a lot of excellent free resources for helping people research.

This chart, while not perfect, is a good general guide to comparative rarity in the US market:
