special question fer rugerlvr:

thanks for the great photos of the matching serial #s. just want to make sure of the 4 places i'm supposed to look. are they top of receiver, bolt, buttplate & trigger guard? a couple photos were hard to determine what part of the rifle was showing. thanks again!

Actually the serial number is on the barrel, not the receiver. It's barrel, bolt, buttplate, and floorplate.

sometimes the serial was stamped on the receiver... and i am not referring to importer added stampings

the finns have been known to do it (i've only observed this on VKT mosins)

some rare examples of it on russian made mosins

the blindee rifles (belgian 8x57 conversions) were numbered on the receiver

IIRC same with the polish 8x57 conversion

and the big brown truck dropped off a long brown box... mosin #13

better than the guy i bought it from made it sound... he said "frosted" when in fact it was just a bit dirty... overall i'd say it's starting to show signs of wear but still quite strong

Here are some pics of my, "according to guys on the MN forum", unmodified Dragoon. My complete rifle pics suck, but here goes.

And here are some part specific pics.

it has been modified in some way... someone added wire hangers...

and quick photo tip... no flash and plenty of ambient lighting (outside on an overcast day is perfect) and put some distance between camera and subject to get the entire rifle in the shot

and a tripod... even a cheap one is always a big help

Can't figure out how to attatch pics but mine's currently in the early stages of sporterising, so far I've gotthen the sights off which was pretty easy if you don't mind doing something slightly dangerous with a gun, but it was $100 so I wasn't really too scared to tear into it

Dang. I just got the Big 5 flyer for my area today. 91/30's are on sale for $70. I've been thinking of getting one to sporterize...

My wife would probably have a conniption.

Score! I went down to the nearest Big 5 at lunch and bought a '43 Ishevsk with plain wood and matching serial #'s for $69.

Perfect to sporterize! ;)

Dang, they're like candy at this price.

btw, www.combathunting.com has the Monte Carlo stock and a scope mount/bolt handle combo for $79 total! I'm in heaven.

I bought my first Mosin Nagant, a '34 Tula M91/30, last Jan. I didn't intend on getting any more, but after the first 5 shots I caught Mosinitis bad.

My second, a '42 Izhevsk M38, was gotten a week later in an even-trade for a spare binos I had laying around. I started looking at M44s & M38s just days after buying my 91/30. My bankroll hasn't allowed for an M91, M44, or preferrably an M39 lately.... but I will get them. Oh yes... they will be mine.
The shellac on my M38 was in pretty sorry shape when I got it, flaking off in abundance, and the wood was dented, scratched, & gouged in many places. So I decided to refinish it with an eye towards durability rather than originality. I got the majority of the damaged spots out, and resurfaced with BLO & Tung Oil. I like the result, but now I'll have to get another M38 in an original state.

Personally, I like my M91/30 the most for it's silky-smooth bolt, unmarred bore, and the ease with which I can consistently punch the 10/x out of my 300m targets using it's plain ol' iron sights.

But oddly enough, I've picked up the M38 more often instead when going to the range. It's not as pretty as my 91/30, it's action is chunky & rough, and it doesn't like feeding with stripper-clips. But if it ain't just one of the handiest rifles I've ever used, and it's been out camping with me a lot. And at the range it always gets the unsuspecting's attention with the first shot, especially when the sun is going down. That, and it likes to set off multiple car-alarms.

Guess which is the Mosin Nagant!

ok this thread needs a bump, i got my M44 about 8 or 9 months ago, but i got a new 91/30 last night, all number match othe then the mag, which i got this one on purpose because the rifling is awesome, bolt runs smooth as butter, and its non-number match so its getting a ATI scope mount and a sniper bolt body as well as a walnut stock.

Rugerlvr:

Your wife should realize what I told mine a few months ago.
"Lots of guys spend lots of money on casinos and titty bars, with nothing to show for it...at least a gun or ammo can be sold at about the purchase cost, and give us security". Yep, the exact words.

When I told her in August that I needed a second MN 44 as a spare (as an early Christmas gift from her),
her head dropped as if she had been struck by a South American native's blow pipe dart.

It sank, and she turned it from side to side, as she stared into an unknown dimension, ready to speak a forgotten, ancient language.
Wish you guys had seen the stunned, baffled look .

Tx, Anax etc:
Beautiful 'babes' and interesting photos.
