Mozzie finally came out toplay today.

Took 58 rounds. Chris fired less than 5, Liam fired maybe 5 or 6. Mick fired 2.... i fired the rest.

My shoulder is in 1 piece. No bruising, no sore spots. But no ammo left. It's gonna take another trip to Sydney to get some. And with how easy i went through it i am going to consider the corrosive stuff. I'll get a small amount first, see how i like it, then consider buying a case. Coz i'm going to need it.

I look forward to getting used to it.

If i do get the corrosive ammo, and i know its been done to death about the place as a topic, so i know about flushing the barrel, what about the bolt? Am i going to have to strip the bolt each time or will flushing it suffice? Or is the bolt not going to be an issue?

The bolt itself wont be an issue, but make sure to scrub down the bolt face where the firing pin comes out. The primer will leak some gas will give an ugly corroded look to the bolt face. It happened to mine ='(. I've cleaned it up some, but you can still see the ring around the firing pin opening.

But like everyone else, make sure you use ammonia or soapy water when flushing out the barrel. Make sure you get a little on the bolt face or that stubborn ring will get on it. A green scratch pad and some Break Free CLP will remove it with a lot of time, but it's better to prevent it from the get-go.

Thanks for the reply.

I should only have a few weeks now till my license comes through so i can go and get my own ammo. I'll still be paying a lot more than you guys do for ammo but it will halve the cost. At the moment i'm paying just over AU$1 a shot... and i went through 3 boxes in half a day. I need to bring the costs down somehow.

I'm hoping to get to a big gunshop tomorrow and buy my own cleaning supplies. I just can't decide between Hoppes No.9 or Sweetes.

screw that. You need to start casting and reloading. My mosin likes cast bullets, and $0.10 US is not bad. Even if you triple the cost of brass/components, that's a huge savings for you. Brass lasts almost forever if you shoot reduced cast loads, since the mosin headspaces on the rim on the cartridge.

My current mosin list includes 2 izzey m44 's one unissued matching , second all matching shooter a very nice rifle both 1944 date , 91/30 tula hex receiver , soviet m38 izzy hex receiver . I am possative this is what they call mosinitas and mine may be fatel .

Is there a "sleeve" of some sort that can be put over then end of the barrel on an M44 to replace the front sight? If so where can I find one?

Let's say that you really "fell" for two good-looking laminated MN 44s in '07-'08.

But you gradually discovered that both produce really bad groups at just 50 yards, for example 6-8". Accuracy is not important to me, but it makes it more challenging to hit a large white juice jug at 100 feet.

Would you offer to trade just one for a 91/30 which has a bright bore, or both for a really nice Polish etc 44 with a nice bore, if you later find the opportunity at a gun show this fall?

IF I was in the buisiness of trading/selling firearms I would trade up. A gun can be gold plated with all the most expensive bells and whistles in the world, if it don't shoot straight it's worthless as far as guns go.

Pics from my last venture out. Pity i got no "live" pics... by the time the camera came out i was out of ammo.

Hopefully not to long now to get my license. Had my dr sign off on the medical side of it... i was prescribed anti-deps late last year when i had a bad reaction to my grandfathers very ill health. And i needed my dr to sign off that i wasn't a risk to myself or the community.

Well, just finished putting a 2x7 scope (NCstar) on the mosin with the UTG mount. Boy that thing is accurate !!!. at 50 yds if i do my part, i can get 3 shot group at about .75" to an inch (7.62x54r do make big holes on paper :)) and that was using surplus ammo. When the opportunity arises, i wouldn't mind bringing this to hunt hogs/ boar.

woops: i put the scope and mount on wednesday, shot it yesterday.

I've got a nice matching M38,and a ''Frankenrifle'' mismatched M44.Great guns.+1 on the cast lead reloading. My .45-70 habit forced me into it,and now I cast and reload for almost every caliber I own!

Just got my first MN today. From what I can tell it's a M91/30 hex, Izhevsk Dragoon, 1927. It looks to be in pretty good shape. $99.95 from classicarms.us. Came with sling, bayonet, ammo pouch, cleaning kit, and some other mini-canteen looking thing covered in a waxy substance. Now I just need a nice day to go shoot it.

Blackbeard, I think you have a M91 "Dragoon". The manufacture of "Dragoons" stopped in 1927 and the start of M91/30 production was in 1930. Make a visit to www.7.62x54r.net. There's a lot there about Mosin Nagants. ;)

Blackbeard, your Dragoon looks great! When you take your rifle out for the first time, just remember this little factoid:

...the Dragoon was sighted with the bayonet attached...*

Why? Because the USSR had some weird beliefs concerning infantry warfare. Not using your bayonet will effect you point of impact, and possibly your accuracy. If you don't want to have the bayonet attached, you'll probably need to re-sight the rifle.
BTW, you're now required to give a range report... :D

Avenger "The 1-10 is the distance of units of 100 metres. 1=100, 4=400, etc. Note that it is METRES, not yards, we're dealing with the metric system here. There's no real difference worth talking about, really, at the ranges a Mosin is accurate to."

So 20 = 2000 meters?
