I forgot to mention that keepshooting.com will include with the rifle a "takedown" tool, a web sling, an oil bottle with two chambers (and cosmoline) twin pebble grained leather ammo pouch and a long spike you can use to toast
marshmallows.

The rifles have been cursorily wiped of the cosmoline but there is still plenty there. Helpful hint: Buy a case of aerosol brake cleaner and it will eat up the cosmoline and save a lot of rags and keep your hands out of the grease.

I have six of the buggers right now. They're like hamsters... the more you leave them alone in a dark safe the more they reproduce. They're all in original military configuration.

is a all matching m44 for 85$ a steal ? im newer to m44s i got a m91/30 that i wouldnt trade for its weight in gold and the m44 is growing on me even though ive had it for a couple of hours now.

"is a all matching m44 for 85$ a steal ?"

not a streal, a bargin, and about 1/2 price at that.

Opee, that sounds like a Refurb commin staright outa the box , ready to clean and shoot! Do not discard the sling or tool kit. They are very handy. A sling is to a rifle what a holster is to a pistol, the cleaning tools are a part of the care you must give any rifle.

Brake cleaner , as suggested, is an excellent way to de-cosmo the chamber, and get it as clean as possible. Cosmo pounded under presser in there can look like shiny steel, but is actually built up and dryed in there, to be pounded into a constriction that makes unlocking the Mosin "sticky"
They cosmo the begeez outta the chamber, for long term storage, 'cause if its rusty in there, The rifle is a waste.

Sticky bolt IS caused by a dirty Chamber and dirty gun. Un-removed Cosmoline can be a real pain.
Use clean ammo, clean your chamber and bore every time you are done using it, the tools provided worked well enough for the Soldier, and the rifle got to you :D

Cleaning your gun is a very very important part of owning and using it.

Late to the party, my first MN, SAKO M39

This showed up at the LGS last week along with another M39. This one is a Civil Guards SAKO, the other a "B" barreled one that looked unfired. This was the cheaper of the two as the original SAKO stock had been poorly varnished.

I have since cleaned the stock with 0000 steel wool and Fairtrimmers.

At the range, however, first shot revealed a pierced primer. So, I've ordered one of those little tools to reset the firing pin before going further.

I've got 2 Mosins, one built into a bench gun, but collecting Mosins is like collecting grass clippings... they made 17 million of them for pete's sake... do you think you got the ONE that's perfect? Gimme a break...

My M91/30 was my first centrefire, and is actually still my only centrefire. Went from an air rifle to a .22LR to that, so it sort of felt like taking a couple of steps up the recoil ladder at a time. It's a 1932 Tula hex receiver, but it looks like the whole rifle has been frankensteined together; the bolt, floorplate, and buttplate all have Izhevsk markings. Best I've done with it so far (and I'm still a newbie to CF) is about 4MOA at 100M (5-shot group, sitting, elbows on the table, wrapped into the sling, stock iron sights).

There's a bit of a story that goes with my acquisition of this rifle and describes my attachment to it; you can find it here (first time I've posted a link, so I hope it works).

And yet out of those there are some interesting and rare ones. But if folks just hack them up then the rare ones might be destroyed.

Im confused on slings when it comes to the mosin nagants? my m44 has a communist one piece leather sling no dog ears its one piece of leather with 2 brass holders on each end so is this some other type of sling not for mosins or is it an oddity?

I have question about a certain variety of Mosin. I'm after the original: an m1891 with the bayonet. Does anyone here have an idea of just how much that will cost and what sort of difficulty I will have in finding one in fair shape?

I hunt all the time with my Mosin Nagant.:D Check out my posts in the hunting area.

An "original", as issued 1891 Mosin Nagant Rifle made in 1891 would be a French Chattrault arsenal made rifle, with a 'hex' (its octagon) reciver, a flat rear sight base, no hand guard over the barrel, no sling slots but the slings rear poit being a swivle atthe front of the magazine and the front one on the front barrel band. The chamber will be necked for the 7.62X54R with a round nosed 180 grained bullet, and a "Finger rest" of steel band inletted from the rear of the trigger guard on down the stock for about4 inches.

I last saw one in Very good condition being sold for 3,500$ and it didnt last the morning. Gone and I was left drooling............:scrutiny:

Anyhoo, if your looking to get an issued 1891 in the later 1910 update and referbed what they had by removing the finger rest (they filled the inletting with a wooden insert) a new rear sight calibrated for the new spitzer cartridge, (it took on a saw tooth profile) as well, the chamber was relived a bit for the spitzer bullet. The stock was inletted with the two sling slots, the barrel bands updated to hole the a hanguard that was added .

That would be basicly any 1891 that wasnt turned into an M91/30 by the Soviets or updated by the Finns, or came from another country.

The Finn ones are choicest.
They had an accuracy standard thet involved marksmenship an not mass fire. If you find an M-91 that was imported in the '90s from Finnland , you will have a rifle that was accurate enough NOT to be updated, and is gonna perform very well. Try Gunbroker, or teh "For sale " at www.gunboards.com, they appear often. If you want an original ( the 91/30 "button lock" wont work with a M-91, you need a "Lock ring Bayonet" , and you can find them at
www.gunsnammo.com

17,000,000 may have been made, but that many certainly does not exist. There was a time when you could by 2 98Mauser's or a Maxim with sled mount off the docks in Philidalphia for 2$ right after WW1. After WWII, a Luger could be had ina pawn shop for 20$, a Mauser98 for 10$-20$, and there were millions too.........were.......

give it a break we've all heard it & we'll continue to hack up whatever we want.
i prefer to hack up all matching rifles just to annoy the collectors.
as far as i'm concerned if it has an import mark its already hacked

For those of you that reload for the Mosin I'll let you in on a very nice little "plinking" load I worked up the other day.

I had read somewhere about some 7.62 x 54R "training rounds" and wanted to try and replicate them.

Where I ended up was with a 115 gr cast lead 30 cal carbine bullet over 7.5gr of green dot. Very accurate at 100 yards with the kick of a 22 magnum.

My Mosin VKT M39

Found this a few months ago , It was pretty rough when I got it. Even though the numbers all matched, It was Import marked, the stock was crappy, finish was gone and headspace was all whacked but, it was a Finn M39 so I took a chance and got it.

Looking around on the Internet for parts to get it back in firing condition, I came across a gentleman by the Name of George Tossan who does restoration work on the Mosins. After I spoken with him, I liked what I heard and sent the VKT to see what he could do with it. In One week this is what I got back
MOSINDAVEDIVER005.jpg MOSINDAVEDIVER001.jpg
It was Refinished and gunsmithed to an optimal accuracy suitable for match/target competition.
the trigger was optimized at 5 lbs.
The barrel floated to stock and then further refined the float at several pressure points along the barrel receiver magazine and recoil bolt to get a complete float.
The barrel, chamber, receiver deep cleaned and the barrel highly polished and barrel was match crowned. A custom steel turned down bolt installed, reusing the bolt knob with the stamped Russian number matching the rifle. The action works buttery smooth now, one finger Mosin Bolt, who would have thought!:p
All metal parts were detailed and refinished.
The stock refinished to show the natural wood grain.
T-6 aluminium Weaver rail installed, The scope is an old weaver 4X scope zeroed, and checked for solid performance.
Took it out to the range today and it shoots so sweet! A true tack driver!

Here is some target photos from my first range trip with the refit VKT. Fired 20 rounds for a warmup at milk jugs and such. Then fired these for zero. It actually does better with the Yugo surplus than some Norma Match ammo. :) All fired @100yds
100_1526.jpg
Top photo was Milsurp east bloc mix
100_1527.jpg
center bulls eye was the Norma and lower right was Russian ball ammo.
Im really pleased, I have a match grade rifle for very little investment. Mr Tossan was very reasonable with his price for refit and the craftsmanship, knowledge and love for what he does definitely shows thru in the finished product.

Im certainly happy with it, They hold matches locally once a month in my area. I think I will give the Garand and 03' fellas a run for their money with this old Finnish war horse :D
