I hunt all the time with my Mosin Nagant.
Check out my posts in the hunting area.
An "original", as issued 1891 Mosin Nagant Rifle made in 1891 would be a French Chattrault arsenal made rifle, with a 'hex' (its octagon) reciver, a flat rear sight base, no hand guard over the barrel, no sling slots but the slings rear poit being a swivle atthe front of the magazine and the front one on the front barrel band. The chamber will be necked for the 7.62X54R with a round nosed 180 grained bullet, and a "Finger rest" of steel band inletted from the rear of the trigger guard on down the stock for about4 inches.
I last saw one in Very good condition being sold for 3,500$ and it didnt last the morning. Gone and I was left drooling............
Anyhoo, if your looking to get an issued 1891 in the later 1910 update and referbed what they had by removing the finger rest (they filled the inletting with a wooden insert) a new rear sight calibrated for the new spitzer cartridge, (it took on a saw tooth profile) as well, the chamber was relived a bit for the spitzer bullet. The stock was inletted with the two sling slots, the barrel bands updated to hole the a hanguard that was added .
That would be basicly any 1891 that wasnt turned into an M91/30 by the Soviets or updated by the Finns, or came from another country.
The Finn ones are choicest.
They had an accuracy standard thet involved marksmenship an not mass fire. If you find an M-91 that was imported in the '90s from Finnland , you will have a rifle that was accurate enough NOT to be updated, and is gonna perform very well. Try Gunbroker, or teh "For sale " at
www.gunboards.com, they appear often. If you want an original ( the 91/30 "button lock" wont work with a M-91, you need a "Lock ring Bayonet" , and you can find them at

17,000,000 may have been made, but that many certainly does not exist. There was a time when you could by 2 98Mauser's or a Maxim with sled mount off the docks in Philidalphia for 2$ right after WW1. After WWII, a Luger could be had ina pawn shop for 20$, a Mauser98 for 10$-20$, and there were millions too.........were.......
