Finaly shot my Mosin!

I fired 15 rounds and my shoulder started hurting too much to continue. Fun gun! I now need to manage the recoil or I will develop a flinch. I am thinking of a tick bite supply butt pad and getting a mercury recoil reducer installed. Otherwise, replace the front sight with an elevation adjustable one and keep the rear sight or install a Mojo rear sight.

If you really want to make a Mosin accurate, save yourself the headaches and get one of these Mojo sights.

David, get a slip on recoil pad and it'll be fun to shoot. I fired a new to me M39 today for the first time as well. On both my 91-30 and this new M39 I find both to be comfortable to shoot with the slip on recoil pad.

Nagants can really benefit from some kinda squishy pad, I used a sliper for mine, but as i was modifying the stock that seemed fitting. Other wise id have gone with a slip over.

It sure bothers my bony shoulders! I bought the one that is supposed to fit the stock perfectly. It doesn't AND it's hard as a rock! I am going to do a little drilling on it to allow it to collapse.

I agree they look stupid. That's why I just keep one in my range box so whatever metal-butt-plate rifle I'm pick up to shoot more than 10-15 rounds I have it to slip on. Keeping one on the gun at all times could also mess up the finish, hold moisture, etc.

What I wuss I know. Can you believe I also use air conditioning in my house and wear shoes when walking working in the yard? It's just more comfortable. :)

Yup, I too prefer the look and feel of the stock steel butt pad. Both in physical feel, and recoil. Shoulder the rifle tight enough and it's rather enjoyable.

My M38 came with the rubber butt pad on it from the previous owner. I'll be re installing the steel one when I get around to it.

If you handload you can always load down to deal with recoil also. 150-160 bucks and you got all you need to reload. I wanna get some 125-130s for mine dont have enough cash.

I bought a fit all recoil pad and it does make the rifle much more fun. I too am pretty small built and have some medical issues that make hard kicking guns of any kind very hard on me. Using this is the only way I can enjoy the rifle....without the pad I am good for perhaps 5 or so rounds, with the pad I can shoot all day.

Hi,

I haven't shot my '43 Izhevsk 91/30 yet, but I was wondering whether I should go ahead and shim the receiver and float the barrel, and put some upward pressure at the front barrel band, before I go out and shoot it. It seems like most stock rifles will get 6'' at 100 yards or so without modifications. Is it a safe bet to just do the minimum accurizing first?

id try it first. My 43 shot 1.5 with decent ammo right out the box, having a base line lets you know if you made any improvement, or caused an issue. Accurizing that works on one gun, or most, may be an issue with another. My rifle still shoots 1-1.5"s after doing a bit of work, including fully bedding the reciever and floating the barrel.

By the way how is the bore on my rifle? I scrubbed it some but it still never came out clean. Also poured boiling water down it.

looks pretty normal for a nagant. Mine looks to have slightly cleaner lands, but my groves look exactly the same.

So that means it should shoot okay right? The pitting is those streaks in the lands?
