The sticky bolt syndrom is common. Look down the magazine to the place the bolt matches up against. On the right side you should see the carve out for the head of the extractor. It took a lot of effort to get the cosmoline out of this recess. I used long wooden Q tips available at Radio shack. Dipped in Gasoline I was amazed to fine yellow goop coming out. Copper washed Ammo seems to be particularly prone, but I had some steel case stuff get sticky on me this weekend. I am considering a Black powder trick that uses a mix of Burt's Bee's wax, Olive oil and a dash of Bore Butter. This is heated and then allowed to cool. I will dab some on the inside of the magazine.

Rationale, I think that when the cartridge is fired, hot gases blow back along the walls heating the oil from the previous cleaning. Oil and gunpowder make a very sticky solution. All oil from the case housing walls must be eliminated.

Well that's the theory.. just gonna have to wait for the weekend unless one of you guys wanna give it a try.

I have one and it is good i like it. I also have two a guy made for me for 16.00 each. He just drilled and taped the trigger and screwed in a a allen screw. They are not as nice as the HB trigger but they are good. polishing the sear and cocking piece mating surfaces all so helps a lot. Here are some trigger improvement links. http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=50969 and http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=118&t=529 and http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2006/improvingm44carbines/index.asp

I forgot to ask, does Mark56. Did the trigger work improve the accuracy? You can see what I am getting and those shots from a seated position with left elbow slightly ahead of kneecap. I bet I could do better from a bench rest. Also I need to recalibrate for shooting with the bayonet and see if it gets tighter, or looser. I'm down to just two types of ammo, the Hunkie heavy ball and the russian brass.

bore

Wish I could get better bore pictures. As you can see in the post, counting in from front to back the 4th row in the walls are starting to look shiney. This shot was from several weeks back. Today, the 2nd and third row look like the 4th and the 4th is just about all shiney. The question is will they all become shiney if I keep at it? And actually, should I keep after it given the pattern I'm now getting?

I didn't have a drill so I just scrubbed the chamber heavily for 20 minutes to try to get rid of the sticky bolt. I got a lot of gunk out of there, hopefully that will do it. I cleaned the barrel again, and removed a bunch more gunk, but towards the end the patch was turning blue. What's causing that?

Decided on my next project, a MN sniper. I'm leaving my present 91/30 alone as its a 1938 Tula, all matching with a great barrel.

My plans are for a 91/30 or M44, keeping the wood stock but either finding or making a ventilated front hand guard. Since my eyes aren't what they use to be, I'll skip the peep and go for a scope. I'm still undecided as to if I should make a scout or turn down the handle. Lastly, I'll work the trigger a little and smooth it up.

On a separate note, does anyone know how long it takes for AIM Surplus to ship? I just bought a case of their Hungarian.

Unless they are swamped, I have usually gotten notice within a business day or 2 that my ammo has shipped from aim.

I boght a case of silver tips from AIM a while back and they said they were running a little behind on shipping.

I received it 5 days later, so they are pretty quick in shipping.

Does anybody have a 91/30 where the lands are all shiney? On the bore pic I posted(response 360) you can see where lands 3, 4, and 5 (counting in from the muzzle) are starting to shine, and since its shooting so stinking accurately, I'm not sure I want to continue polishing out the crud. But, I am curious.

I have 91/30s with mirror bores that won't shoot for squat. I have a 2 91/30s with frosted bores that are MOA rifles. My advice is to quit scrubbing on that bore, and take the rifle out to the range. Fire 15-20 rounds out of it, then run a couple patches through it. Cleaning it hot will get a lot of stuff out of the rifle. Shiney bore does not = accurate rifle though.

Been awhile since I've been around. Just got a new job and life has been hectic as expected.

I put in Doctor Zhivago this afternoon (anyone old enough to have seen this one? :)), saw them using my favorite rifle, and figured I should at least drop by.

I have a Finn M28 with Sig bull barrel and a M39 both bores look like mirrors both are tack drivers.

Franco2shoot, The HC triggers are very nice but you can do almost as good polishing the sear and cocking piece mating surfaces and shimming the sear. You are shooting 1 inch groups with out a rest with surplus ammo it doesn't get much better than that. For a few more dollars more than that HC trigger you can buy a Lee Anniversary Kit with a copy of Modern reloading. By hand loading you be to make ammo that is a lot more accurate than surplus and commercial 54R. You can also tweak surplus ammo i have had success pulling down surplus ammo reducing the powder by two GR.
