Congrats- they are a lot of fun and very cheap to shoot. If you get the cheap surplus ammo, make sure to clean it, clean it, and clean it again. That ammo is extremely corrosive and will do a number on your bore if you don't clean it well after use.

Have fun!

In deed a most excellent rifle!!

Do not fret over corrosive ammo, its a breeze to clean up after.

Corrosive ammo has 'salts' that are a part of the priming compound.
Simply dissolve the salts with a wash of boiling hot water poured down the bore.
I pour , scrub, rinse and switch to solvents, then oil. Its one extra step in normal cleaning of non corrosive priming, and being boiling water, it dries itsself very quickly.
It worked for whoever had the rifle back in '43 :D

I just got one up my way. A fun plinker and I suppose it would do pretty well for hunting if I were a hunter.

With old guy eyes the sights suck. I'm thinking I'll figure out some way to install either a peep sight on the stock at the back of the action or maybe try a larger aperature peep instead of the stock notched rear sight.

Looks a beauty, I have a hex Izhevsk 1929 and I love it! Been reworking the trigger, polished and shimmed it now is a lot better. Your rifle has a lot more tool marks but seems of good quality. I'll start doing range reports and I think you should do the same.

Very nice Mosin, but I have a question.

A very disturbing question on Mosin TLC.

WHY would anyone lay a new Mosin on hard stones and then add insult to injury and expose the Mosin to toxic foot odors?

You should be shot with a dull bullet, be drawn and quartered and have your library card revoked.

Just kidding, but put a little polish on those shoes if your going to add them to your milsurp photos.

Haha. I layed it down very gently. I don't know what to tell you bout the shoes. I'll wear my chippewas next time. Better? Lol

What is a good site you guys go to to find all kinds of mosin nagant stuff. Everything from stripper clips to stocks and all the goodies. Im just asking because I don't want to chance it and buy anything from a site that isn't legit.

Ok thanks.

I've never fired a rifle before...ever...and I think I'll have to take the metal butt plate to the shoulder for awhile as punishment for buying a mule for my first rifle. I did the same thing buying a kimber ultra carry as my first pistol. haha.

Go big or go home right? I think. haha

If you have never fired a rifle before, heres some Mosin advice;

First, the saftey, other than "YOU" is the cocking knob, as seen from the rear, it moves from 12 o'clock in "Fire" to "Safe" at 9 o'clock.
To use the saftey, grasp the rifle like your gonna fire it, lower it to your right elbow while still gripping the fore stock with your right, and move your trigger hand to the safety, and with the butt firmly in your elbow, grasp the knob back pull back while rotating the knob counterclockwise to the 9 oclock in "Safe"
The safty is unmarked and not the easiest to use untill you practise a bit with teh way I described, its easy and Very positive. It also locks the bolt quite shut.

Anyhoo, when you use the rifle, you must have the butt firmly against your shoulder, pulled snug by the trigger hand, and layed 'apon" you left hand (shooting right handed) and not firmly grasped at the front end, so you dont shake all over, but get a nice, stedy lay of the rifle.
If you do not have the butt fi

Thanks for the advice caribou. I've shot a few 12 gauges so hopefully I won't be too sore the next day. My left shoulder has some old lingering injuries from my teens. Haha. Young and fearless right? Haha

Also, the Mosin's are not made to be babied. To work the bolt you slap the handle up, then to the rear, then slam it forward, then slap it down. No pussy-footing around - use some force.

Welcome to the family mate. They may be cheap, but they are fuuuuunnn to shoot. Be sure to treat her with respect :D

I've had mine since I was 16, and haven't had a problem since. Reliable, hefty, and cheap to feed.

Here's a shot of mine in her natural habitat. :)
