I have a mosin M91/30 and i want to mount a scope on it I bought a cheapo walmart tasco scope its called bucksight (i think) and i mounted it onto a scout scope mount and the when im looking through it its not as clear as i would like i dont think the eye releif isnt proper for this setup. im looking for a cheap scout scope i cant justify spending 5 times the price of the rifle on a good scope such as a Leopold. so im looking for a decent quality scope to plink with i would be happy with a red dot on it too. I was looking at a NC star scout scope but i wanted feedback before i got it. this rifle will manly be built plinking but may se some time in the field hunting with me. any suggestions will be much appreciated and i know some of you will say keep the irons but i would like it mounted for possible long range work.

When i look through it it seems as though parts of the scope is blacked out and since im new to rifles Im not sure if im looking through it wrong or something is not right and advice their.

Try the BSA pistol scope. It usually runs about $30 and it is the only decent scope BSA makes. I have one that I used as a scout scope on my M44 and it worked perfect. It is now mounted on my scouted K31 and is still holding up just fine. I think the BSA is just what your looking for. Here's a pic of mine.

which mount is that, and how does it hold up under recoil? what was installation like?

I bought the darrell mount for my m91s but I couldn't get it to stay in place. Thing kept shifting upwarsd. Probably I was installing it wrong but I couldn't figure out how I was goofing up the instructions.

That's a S&K. Here's a link. http://www.scopemounts.com/ You can also get them at Brownells. It has held perfectly so far. I have only fired about 75 rounds with this setup though. I havent noticed any shift in POI or anything else bad. S&K make the best mil-sup mounts anywhere. I have another on my Ishapore Enfield, it's the traditional, over the action type mount and it has held flawlessly. Installation is a breeze and they came with very good instructions. These are far higher quality than the "pot metal" B-Square mounts.

I've figured out a way to mount a scope on a mosin. You know how earlier Mosin Snipers have the base right above the area where the barrel and the receiver meet. I took a weaver rifleman leupold 700 mount from walmart and took the front mount and drilled and tapped the mount onto the area where the barrel screws in. The rear hole is okay to drill the whole way through, but dont drill the forward hole the entire way through because that is where the casing rests when you close the bolt. I then bought a scope mount from Accu Shot and a weaver K-3 to go into it. I also forged a bolt out of a threaded bolt I got at the local hardware store. I'll try to find a picture, but it very closely resembles the old 91\30 PEM Sniper .

The third picture from the top is what it basically looks like.

What ever you do, do not get an NcStar scope. They are complete junk. I would get a Darrell's mount and get a BSA pistol scope. Then, save up and get a little better pistol/scout scope later.

as long as ya don't shoot it much the cheap scopes will hold up...... A friend wanted to know if the BSA red dot could handle recoil, I mounted it on a G3 (.308) which is way less recoil at the reciever than a bolt gun in 7.62x54, it held up for 92 rnds physically but POI was shifting before that at 92 rnds the housing literally disintegrated, we proceeded to test a bunch of cheap scopes just for the hell of it, ncstar.... don't even waste your time, Simmons, better than any of the BSA but they are basically made by the same factory in china, Bushnell in the form of a 4-12X42 variable........ 78 rnds and it was toast, the one "cheap" scope that handled over 400 rnds before we gave up was a Nikko Stirling from CDNN Sports it cost $69 on closeout (retail $123) it was a 1.5-6x44 model #npt3015644, he is still using it on a FAL the others all had the optics rattle loose internally within a few shots, we disected several and found one thing consistant with ALL the made in china scopes..... they have no real mounts for the glass internally they are epoxied in place and in every case of self destruction the epoxy had shattered and chipped away from the glass, in a quality scope there is no glue used to hold things together ya have stacked threaded mounts with rubber shock mounts etc...
