Moss. 590A1 8th shell???

Friend of mine recently bought a 20" Mossberg 590A1, literature states it has a 8+1 capacity but so far he can only be load it with 7 shells in the tube?

Anyone else have this issue, he has tried leaving it loaded to see if the springs just need worn in a bit, but not even close to taking the 8th round.

Any ideas?

is he using 2 3/4 inch shells? that capacity is for 2 3/4 inch shells. if he is using 3 inch the capacity is reduced by 1.

Yep, first thing I thought of two, but 2 3/4" shells.

Keep in mind that's a fired length, so an unfired 3" shell will be about 2.75" long.

Mine took the 8th round with no problems.

My 590A1, with 20" barrel, takes 8 rounds without any problem. I finally was able to fire it for the first time this weekend and really enjoyed it. No issues in about 100 rounds using an assortment of 2 3/4 shells.

I currently have the stock spring and follower, but am going to switch to a Wolff spring and Vang comp follower in the near future.

My non-A1 590 takes 8 rounds fine.

Live ammo, 2 3/4" factory loads

Take the mag tube cap off/spring out and then load the shells as normal. See what the prob is. Isn't that kind of obvious?

Not a shotgun guy, don't know about them, but I was assuming it's either the spring binding or the follower being put into a bind by the spring somehow. Guess your way would confirm there is nothing physically wrong with the tube itself though.

my 590 was stiff for a little bit
dont force the shell in but load it to the 7 and shoot it a bit (or cycle snapcaps if you want to wear it in while at home)
also you can take the mag tube apart and check that the spring is seated inside the follower and tube properly
mossberg has a spring keeper under the mag tube cap that may be shifted check that it is fluch with the end of the mag tube and not seated to deeply
check the spring for a kink too while you have it apart

if non of that is the solution you have two choices
1.send it to mossberg
2.buy a new spring and follower of your choice (wolff and vang comp is a nice set up)

also make sure that you have the 20 inch gun not the 18 inch because the same manual i think ships with both and in the 18 inch gun your max cap is 7+1 with 2 3/4 shells

A 590a1 with 7+1? You mean the 18.5" barrel, right? It's 5+1.

20inch 590s are 8+1. 20 inch 500s are 7+1/

ah yes thanks rand and chevy for correcting me on that your right the 18.5 590 is only 5+1 and the persuader models of the 500 are 7+1
