I don't get it.

Remington makes a very fine shotgun, no doubt.

However, I'm not sure that I could bring myself to own one.

The slide release is positioned FORWARD of the trigger guard, whereas on Mossbergs, it is to the rear of the trigger guard.

On a Mossberg, one can easily manipulate the slide release without changing grip, but on a Remington, it requires a dramatic change in grip.

I don't get it. Is there a reason why Remington did this? There has to be something I'm missing...

What are your thoughts on the matter as well as your preferences?

I have both. The Mossberg 500 8-shot was the first gun I ever bought. I love the position of the slide release I thought all shotguns had the release there. Then I bought an 870 for bird hunting, since my Mossberg is more a home defense gun. I don't understand why you should have to change your grip to operate any lever on any gun(other than say a charging handle). I find the 870 points better than my Mossberg but I don't like the position of the safety or slide release. Good shotgun, just has some things to get used to.

I was raised on the M500, and actually think the Mossberg a little more ergonomic than the 870 relative to the slide release.

I've transitioned to the 870 release, mainly after choosing the 870 because of the availability of accessories and the weight of the 870 being slightly heavier. After looking at the way the Remington releases, I understand it, and have become used to the hand movement.

It was different, but I adjusted to just the 870. I actually prefer the safety of the 870, using the oversize bighead from Scattergun/Wilson... as I rest my firing finger on the button for tactile reference, just like the button on the slide stop of my 1911.

All the best,

I'm no expert but while shopping around I did tend to like the slide release location of the Moss and Win's better than the Rem. When it was all said and done I just didn't seem to put a lot of weight on that particular function. You only have to use the release if you haven't pulled the trigger such as while loading/unloading in which case you already have changed your grip anyway. I'm used to it now and it's a non-issue for me.

Non-issue here also. Of course, my "Chops" are well polished after all these years and use.

There's good reasons to pick one shotgun over another. This isn't enough of one to matter, IMO.

I happen to prefer my Maverick by Mossy. One brother likes his 870, other brother likes his 1100, cousin prefers Winny 1200. Shooting buddy swears that Ithica is the only decent pump shotty ever made.

Soooo, In My Humble Opinion only, find the one that has the "fit and feel" that suits you best.

As long as you stick to one of the "Big Four", ya can't go wrong

(I know the 1100 is an auto-loader, brother is a guy of "lesser physical presence" 5-7, 155).
