I love the .30-.30 round. I have a older model winchester 94 and have thought about a mossberg 464 in .30-.30. Any opinions on this rifle?

I was selling guns when they first came out and was able to handle one. I was not impressed, but that has been sometime ago so things may be different now. The fit and finish was sloppy though Mossberg does tend to make a decent product to a price.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I think they are the best 30-30 on the market is the sub-$800 range. They balance like a Winchester 94, but have the more solid action and scope mounting ability of the Marlin. The tang safety, while unnecessary IMO, is preferable to the cross bolt of the Marlin. The birch stocked model is kind of plain, but the walnut stocks I have seen on them have been very nice.

When you get it home and compare it side by side with your Winchester it will be a huge let down.

You are 100% right but never be able to convince the "purists"

I bought one for deer hunting and it has performed extremely well. It is accurate, especially with Hornaday LeveRevolution ammo. It has extended the range out to 200yds or a little more. Mine is not fancy but is fitted well and works flawlessly. I will give it a thumbs up.

I would rather pay $400 for a new Mossberg than $700 for a beat up Winchester 94 that sold for less than $200 when new,,,

Try to find a Steven 325 or Savage 340 (basically the same gun) which are bolt action detachable mag 30-30s. A bolt action opens up all kinds of possibilities for 30-30 loads. Should be able to find one less than $200.

I have an old Model 94 and a Marlin 336 in 30-30 but the bolt action Steven 325 is more versatile in terms of what it can shoot.

My nephew, Andrew, (who looks like twin to my son) bought the pistol grip Deluxe model when it first came out. We mounted a Bushnell 1.5X-4.5X scope (less than $70. eBay) and zero'd it for 150 yards. 170 grain Winchester Power Points produced consistent 4 inch groups at this extended range.

Andrew toppled a nice 6 point buck in western Maryland first season with the Mossberg. Since then, he moved to Virginia and has done equally well. Two big does were taken in 2012 and 2013. No luck with bucks.

Mossberg 464 is a keeper!

What Onmilo said in post #9. Right before Winchester stopped producing the '94 a few years ago, I bought two: a 16" Trapper and 24" Legacy, both .30-30. I don't think either of them cost me more than $450 OTD, and this was between 2005-2007. The Mossbergs don't look bad at all for the price, but granted I've only handled them at the gun store.

This time of the year its pretty easy to find a used Marlin or Winchester .30-30 for $200-$275 from someone looking to raise money for Christmas shopping.

I have a Mossberg shotgun, but I don't think I would ever own one of their lever guns.
