Been looking at one of these at a local gun shop. Don't mind the plain looking wood. Fit and finish seams really nice for the price. Weight and balance feel real nice to me. Action seems a little stiff, but not terrible.

OK question is: Does anyone have any real experience with this model? Please don't just tell me to buy a Marlin or a Winchester.....

Bought one for Christmas. Didn't get to hunt with it this year but will this coming year. The action will smooth out quite nicely and the trigger isn't bad at all. I can't see much at 50 yds, much less 100 but my groups were decent using 150gr Corelokts. I ordered a Nikon Prostaff and used Warne quick detach rings. I plan on sighting it in this weekend, but that depends on if the new grandchild gets born this weekend or not. I have fired about 100rds through it now and it cyles well.

I bought 2 boxes of the Hornaday Leverevolution ammo for it. Anxious to see how well it does. I bought this gun to hunt in NC in mainly heavy brush but some field shots. It is nice and light and I have the ability to hunt with or without optics. The bases are low enough to see the irons over them. I will post a range report once I am sighted in.

Sorry, but buy a used Marlin or Winchester. The Mossbergs have been plagued with problems. They are much heavier and ungainly than the Marlin or Winchester. Lever actions should be trim and handle well, not like a fence post.

They show some nice looking wood on their website and in the catalogs, but all I've seen in person had wood that was just awful.

Care to cite some examples? I am really curious as I have never heard one thing about them.

Lets take a look at the specs.

Marlin says the 336 weighs 7lbs

Winchester has theirs listed at 6.8lbs

Mossberg has theirs listed at 6-3/4(6.7)lbs

Looks like it might be alot more opinion than fact. Seems like alot of bashing based on your opinion. A fence post? I think not.

The entire Model 464 bolt system has exceptional mass and strength given the overall slim receiver design, and we can safely expect to see Mossberg eventually offer it for more robust lever-action chamberings.

I looked at it when one of the editors of Guns and Ammo, a member here, talked about what a fine rfile it was and took several deer with it last year. He had high regard for the little rifle.

I wonder what your personal experience is with this gun? Have you ever fired one or gone beyond looking at one at the LGS? I have owned/fired all of the above and this is as good or better.

I had a current production 336, a last ditch Winchester 94, and the Mossberg side by side on the counter of a LGS not long ago. The Mossberg actually felt better carried at my side one handed at the balance point than the Marlin. Not enough to make a difference between any of them. I would go by price at this point, for a 30-30, if I didn't already own a 99 Savage in that chambering.

Uncle had one and worked just fine. He's passed now and the gun went to another family member. I have Marlin and Winchester levers, so I never had to tote that one. Did shoot it a few times and it seemed right in there with mine. Don't know of a reason to not do it?

I have an old well worn 94 & have handled/fired a 336. Both fine guns & each have their strong points. I just bought a SS trapper length 464 with the Davidson's Lifetime warranty after fondling one. I did read that some of the early production models had extractor issues & read two post that had broken screws. In every case Mossberg was responsive & addressed the issue.
The 464 I bought has a pistol grip stock so it's a little different, but other than that it feels pretty familiar & I love the 16.25" quickness. It's almost too pretty to use for what I bought it for. It's a Truck or Jeep gun.
Mossberg needs to make this in .308!

I have handled the Mossbergs at two different gun shops and three different gun shows.
Every one displayed the poor wood and rough action feel that are the common complaints.

The rifles may advertise as lighter in the specs. but in reality they don't have the lively feel of a Model 94, they feel clunky in the hands.

I wanted to buy one of these until I actually handled them,,,,:(

I did not handle a blued version, but the SS version has a laminated stock & the fit & finish is very good. Side by side comparison, I like the 464 just fine. Now 40 something yrs from now, we'll see if it holds up as well, but if it doesn't Davidson's will send me a new one :neener:
