I talked with one of my dad's coworkers last night and he has a Mossberg 500 that doesn't pump. He says it will shoot once but then binds up and won't pump. He is going to bring it over for me to look at. I don't really know much about them but I figured with the help at THR I could get it done.

The gun belongs to his son and he told me that after last season he put the gun in the case wet and now it has some rust. I know that might be the only problem, but what works good to remove rust? Most likely just surface rust binding it up would be my guess. But if I have to really take it apart are 500's relativly easy to take apart and put back together.? If not I might just tell him to take it to a gun smith.

Hard to imagine that a Mossberg would rust enough in one year to bind, or that with most moving parts, like the action bars & bolt carrier, moving across aluminum surfaces that any kind of rusting would cause it to seize.

If it is rust causing a problem it would likely be rust in the chamber not allowing the empty to be extracted. Clean chamber with brass brush if this is the case. If the rust is pretty bad in the chamber a bit of 0000 steel wool on the brass brush turned with a drill will help. If action is locking up from something else - best to take to gunsmith who is more familiar with the workings .
