I've been eyeballing a new shotgun lately to back up my old Winchester and seem stuck on a new Mossberg. This will be used primarily as a bird gun, possibly waterfowl, and an occasional buckshot only deer hunt. I have found several good deals in my area on both the 500 and 535. It seems that the 535 is only about $30 more than the 500 and I wonder if there is any real reason to pick it over the 500.

Both are good guns. If it were me I would just get the 500 and spend the extra $30 on shells to help it get smoother and more refined in the action. JMO.

Unless you think that you need the capability to use 3-1/2" shells I would stick with the 500. I bought the 3-1/2" so for a "turkey" gun and I had to use the 3-1/2" shells, that is until I patterned the gun.....one word, OUCH!!

The 535 has been one of the biggest infuences in convincing me and anyone else that I can get to shoot it that there is absolutely no reason for anyone to ever need the 3-1/2".

The 535 is great with 3" and 2-3/4" shells and that is all I use anymore, It has become my dedicated "slug" gun, I could easily have done the same thing with a 500....

If you are looking to hunt high flying Geese then you will need a 535 to fire a 3.5" Magnum round or you will never reach them. If there are no Geese in your future the 500 will be more than fine. Buy the 500 Field/Deer Combo and have even more fun. I bought the Mossberg 500 Field/Security Combo for $239. That package comes with a 28" vented barrel, a 18.5 riot barrel, wooden stocks, a pistol grip, 3 chokes and the choke tool. All I needed to add was a Skeet Choke and I was done. Very nice IMO...
