I have a Mossberg 535 with waterfowl and Turkey barrels for it. What I'd like to do is also use it for home defense. I'm not seeing anything on the Mossberg website for those sort of accessories so I'm wondering if stocks and barrels are interchangeable with the 500?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know anything about the 535. If they aren't interchangeable, you could buy another hunting barrel and have it cut down and new bead installed.

A 22" Mossberg Turkey gun is about as "tactical" as anyone needs to get inside their own home for HD.

If you can handle it well enough to kill a turkey while setting on your butt in the mud in a brush blind???

You should be able to put the perminent dirt on any BG at 20 - 30 feet just as well with the same gun & 22" barrel you got.

Remember this:
It's not the crooked arrow in the quiver or bow you have to worry about.
It's the indian shooting it!

RC, I agree for the most part but I think it would be improved if:

-stock with shorter length of pull. I'm thinking a youth stock, I'm not fond of the AR style grips.

-a higher capacity Mag tube would be nice.

-A shorter barrel suitable for buckshot and slugs would be a plus.

Thanks for the insights. I'm inexperienced with a shotgun and only use it to hunt.

Stocks and barrels will interchange with the 500, but you will be limited to 3" shells. There isn't a way to add a mag extension, you would need to swap the magazine tube for a longer one, then buy a barrel for that mag tube. I would leave it as it is for HD, except changing to a more open choke. The shortest barrel you could run would be 18", and that's only a 4" difference.

Rule 303. EXCELLENT! Thank you!

The main thing that makes the 535 unhandy is that long stock... it kept hanging up bringing it to the shoulder in my loose fitting spider man jammies :p

A barrel that will handle Buckshot and Slugs would be nice too.

The capacity would be nice but you get pretty good feeding it when hunting ducks.

stocks should be interchangeable, but wouldn't the mag tube of the 535 be longer to accommodate the 3.5" shells?

a quick search found this in the archives: http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-636875.html

and the pic referenced in that post:

of course, that kit from brownell's would solve the problem by replacing both the mag tube and the barrel. But for $150 for the kit, just spend a few bucks more and get a Mav88 or something on the used market.

Thanks Tiamat! Great link.

One of my reasons for exploring this conversion was after seeing the prices for used HD shotguns locally. $300 is about the bottom end and $400+ was more common.

Yeah, I hear ya on the cost. I am shocked to see what the MSRP is these days on a HD model shotty, and you're right, everyone in the user market seems to be caught up in the panic pricing. I can find 835's all day long at the local gun shops in the $200-250 range depending on how beat up they are, but those aren't really a great platform to start out with for HD purposes either. And I have yet to see a 590 or 590A1 used for sale anywhere.

That brownell's kit might really be the best way to go for you.

500 barrels NOT immediately compatible with 535

I have a mossberg 535 and several barrels for it meant for a 500. I am fairly certain that the limited selection of 535 barrels are all chambered for 3.5inch and under, whereas the 500 barrels max out at 3 inch rounds.

The barrel that came with my 535 is a deer slugger, it is rifled. This in itself makes the barrel a poor choice for home defense, or goose hunting as it disturbs the shot pattern to a slight donut.

Putting a 500 barrel on a 535 is no small task. Regardless of what derivatives Mossberg makes, a 500 barrel will need a 1.1x1.1 standoff (plus threads tapped in and die'd out, 7/16-20) to mate onto the 535's slightly *shorter* magazine tube. The threads on the 535 and 500 are the same at the nut. The magazine tubes are interchangeable to allow either choice of barrels, however most 500 receivers will likely not cylcle 3.5 inch shells properly (not that anyone is posting about converting in that direction).

I agree that the brownells kit is a much smarter choice IF you do not plan to use other barrels. Conversely, it actually makes more sense to have a few shotguns than to have a few barrels, with the small difference in price so those suggesting a mav88 are thinking ahead.

For me, I like the adapter I machined that allows me to put a 500 barrel for muzzle loading, or a HD 18.5 cylinder bore (3in max) on my 535. Converting my magazine would make my useless deer barrel uselessER. Lesson learned here, Buy what you need, not what is on sale (or know what you need, I did not at first).

PS
the referenced image comparing the 500 to the 535 seems NOT TO SCALE or possibly named in reversed. Fact of the matter, is the 535 magazine tube sticks out less far than the 500, period.

PSS
heed chamber overpressure warning!!! Never fire a shell longer than what is stamped on the barrel!!!

If the barrel you have is back bored/overbored, Mossberg says not to use slugs in it. At least they used to...

You can use accu chokes with the 22" barrel on the 535. Mount a flashlight on the 535 and a butt cuff, it's as tactical as anyones gun. For those of you that can't shoulder the 535 you can get a synthetic stock cut down. Most 535's come with the stock recoil pad and a slip on recoil pad. You can pull the slip on recoil pad off the gun.

Don't worry about recoil. If you are scared someone is going to kill you, recoil will not be an issue. You will cut down just as fast with the 535 as someone with an AR peashooter.
