I discovered that I've lost the "safety click ball" (safety detent ball), probably when I replaced the original with a metal slide. Or maybe later from lack of lube or free movement. I never use the safety so don't know when it went missing.

Anyway, I'm looking for information on the size of the ball bearing used and whether there are local (Salem, Oregon) handy sources for a replacement.

IIRC, they are .125" in diameter. I can double check that tomorrow.

A ball bearing works fine, if you can find one. I have used one in my 590 for years.

So are ball bearings, go to McMaster Carr web site, ball bearings can be had in different materials and sizes.

They are just hard steel ball bearing balls.
Anything softer would wear and gall into the receiver.

I don't understand what the question is thorough?

You get replacements from Mossberg free?
Or, you pay the part price +! Shipping from Brownell's or Midway.

You pick it, how you want to get it.
And if you want it free or pay for it + shipping.

I'll give Mossberg a call. Nearly $4 plus shipping for what appears to be a .0625 ball bearing is a bit much. I tried the local Ace hardware, found a 3/32 for 37 cents. Unfortunately too big.

I'm sorry Guy, I forgot all about you...

I just pulled the safety off of my 590, the detent ball measured .1235" and the hole in the receiver is .1265" measured with a $29.95 digital caliper.

3/32 is .093, are you using the detent plate to try to size the ball bearing?

I have a little plastic "Lunch Tray" with strips of magnets along the inside well of all four sides of the tray.
When working with little parts this has kept me sane (for the most part) for several years.
When recently changing the safety on my Mossberg 500, it was a real handy bit of kit to have.
$3.50 is a bit pricey for a BB, but Numrich has them.

Well, the commercial sites want $3.99 plus shipping. Mossberg wants me to send the 500 in to have the safety detente ball replaced. I don't care for the idea of paying shipping for the 500 for a 5 cent ball so I decided to look around.

I purchased a package of 100 chrome steel .125" bearing balls from VBX in Anaheim, California for $4.95 and shipping of $5.38, total $10.33.

So far so good. Hope they are the correct replacement. Actually, I am not particularly worried as I never use the safety and need it to remain firmly OFF. It had been loose and causing mysterious glitches in the shotgun function.

Now, what to do with the other 99?

$4 for a guarantee the safety works properly is a small price to pay. I agree it's a lot for the part. I'd pay it and skip lunch out for one day to guarantee it was down properly. should you ever had something odd happen with safety and ND you will always wonder otherwise.

#4 shot is not much value to me as I don't do shotgun sports. Maybe some multi gun if I get to reloading rifle ammo, but other than that the Mossberg houses 00 buckshot for home defense.

The Mossberg replacement parts are not currently in stock at Midway, etc., and there is an indefinite wait.

Again, I am not really concerned about the safety function as I don't use it. I depend on safe handling instead. I do want to make sure the safety remains in the off position so the 500 doesn't lock up when I need it. As long as it is meeting my needs I have time to evaluate the fix.

Might have been easier then to just stake it in the OFF position
