Just what type of road are they planning on blocking anyway?

In all seriousness though, my friends and I were just talking about this model (and other Mossy's). I think it looks kind of silly. One friend thinks it's hottest thing he's seen in a while. Another is middle of the road. So anyway, my friends and I go to a show recently and see one (I wish I could remember the price). That fracking muzzle brake looked HUGE! Maybe it was me. Maybe it was the heat of the day, I don't know.

Fast forward a few weeks, and new show is coming to town. My friend is stating if he sees it, there's a good chance he'll pick it up. He's just unsure as he hasn't heard a thing about it, or met an owner of one. All his talk has me thinking about this unholy marrage of PG Shotgun and Barrett (type) muzzle brake. Does anyone have first hand experience with this thing? I'm really wondering if the brake works, or if it's a "marketing idea". As weird as it looks, if the brake really reduces recoil I could actually see picking one up if that's the case. But I know I'll feel weird if I do. And My 870 would hate me...
BTW, my friend is interested in having it as a car gun :scrutiny:.
Me? I don't know. Home, car, boat, space capsule, zombie movie.

The Road Blocker and the "Rolling Thunder" are cheap, party-favor add-on crap that Mossberg should be ashamed to sell. Honestly, I thought both were lousy photo-chops the first time I saw them.

This is "last-page-of-Sportsman's-Guide" glue-on accessory crap that a card-carrying Mall Ninja would be ashamed to be seen with ... even in those "special" shots wearing nothing by a tactical speedo and duct-taped ceramic plates. :barf:

As if PGO shotguns didn't already have way-too-high a bark-to-bite ratio (meaning that they are far more LOOKIE than they are useful) these models just shove the whole affair into sort of "Japanime" hyper-lethal ridiculousness that says a lot more about the owner's desperate need for attention than his need for protection.

Joe Camel was accused of being a tool to market cigarettes to kids. In that same vein, Mossberg is now building guns entirely to appeal to the 14-year-old boy market...and they apparently feel pretty certain that the average gun buyer never matured past that point.

But, gee, I guess that's just my opinion! :neener:

"last-page-of-Sportsman's-Guide"
Hah!:D
I always liked the lines of the 500 Cruiser (6 & 8 round versions), but have stayed away from PG only shotguns. I love my 870, but sometimes it's a bit large. I like the compactness of the PG only types, but have not shot one. I'm always hearing about the harsh recoil and whatnot.
One must shoot from the hip with a PG only SG, right? I'm not fond with the idea of getting smacked in the face and maybe loosing teeth in the process. :)

I think one would be cool, useful well no but still when was the last time the thing at the end of the barrel had to be useful. Id love one on the end of my 12ga rifled barrel.

I owned a 500 A 8-shot Cruiser for about 12 years before converting it to a traditional buttstock. The recoil -- even with slugs -- is far FAR overhyped. You'd think it would tear your arm right off to hear people talk about it.

And no, you DON'T have to fire it only from the hip. That's a bit of Mossberg covering their A$$ (they do write that in the owner's manual). You just have to have a good hold on it and don't shoot it like a 7-year old Girl Scout with her first .22. Several friends and I bought these back in college and used to shoot clay birds with them occasionally. Even hit some sometimes. The technique was to get the support hand out where it would normally be on a full-butt pump gun and use both hands to soak up the recoil. Target loads helped. The firing hand was brought in line with the eye to try and mirror the standard view down the barrel. It was pretty dumb, and we never broke more than a handful of birds. Sort of mindless fun :), but none of us ever broke their nose doing it, either.

The "correct" shooting method is to tuck your firing hand and the grip of the gun in tight against your side -- NOT your hip -- and you index your whole body towards the target. It isn't all that inaccurate at short range, IF you've practiced a fair amount and know what you're doing.

Even shooting 3-gun and similar games, the usefulness of the PGO set-up is extremely limited. I kept mine as the last-ditch, always-there-but-never-fired home defense gun. Which is fine, but I came to believe that I could do just as well at the home defense thing with a real butt-stock (and probably better) and if it had a full butt, I'd actually practice with it and know what I was doing if I ever HAD to grab it. That's important to me.

Thanks for the info thus far!
JShirley, Yeah... it does look funny. But has anyone owned/tried one yet? It's a burning question with me. Does the darn brake work? Or is it just...there?
The funniest pic I saw was at Gunblast's SHOT Show 2009 coverage page.
It had a BIPOD. A BIPOD I tells ya! I truly hope that was for display purposes.

PG only isn't bad to shoot at all if you do it right. But the factory grip sucks. It puts all the recoil right into the web of your thumb. The Pachmayer presentation grip is much easier on you since it puts your hand behind the gun instead of under it. It also spreads the recoil and absorbs some too. But alas it's still not useful as an HD weapon without some sort of aiming device (laser or tight beam light) and not nearly as fast as a stocked gun.

Personally when I saw it I thought it was the MOST ridiculous thing I'd ever seen for a shotgun. To me, it just screams ''look at me, i'm a rambo wanna-be''. As for does it work? I guess if it DOES work, then it has some merit. But honestly, if you're buying the gun for home defense, how many rounds are you gonna fire anyway? I'm betting not more than the 5 or so that they hold, and if you can't handle the recoil from 5 shotgun shells, then maybe a pistol would be a better defense weapon, or a fly swatter lol. But I'm just a function over form kinda guy.

My .02

I just purchased the road blocker today, I havent shot it yet, yes it does look a little silly, but if it will help out on recoil why not, and yes it comes with a bipod ahaha

I asked about it at the SHOT Show

Their response was that it was intended as a muzzle brake for semi-auto shotguns, for quicker follow up shots.

My next question: 'Why is it also on the 500?'

Their answer: '...It looks cool, so why not?'

Man thats sweet but wheres the tank they stole the muzzle brake from?

Maybe we could start a little THR betting pool, how long until mossberg mounts one of these babies on a PGO 12ga?

Given this new developement, the "road blocker", I would like to pick next year's shotshow as my bet.

Maybe they could call it the Mossberg 500 Galaxy Blocker? They could team up with the boys from Extreme Shock!?! and release it with a sample pack of the EXTREME SHOCK INSTANT MURDER DEATH KILL UBER SLUGS(made from compressed anti-matter) .:barf:

What may I ask is that in front of the tank ? Is it some sort of flash hider or something ?

That is a German suppressor for their 155mm artillery pieces, because Germany has some rather draconian laws regarding noise pollution, that even the armed forces have to follow. So, yes, that is a Silencer for a 155mm cannon!

As for the "Roadblocker" Anyone seen the "Rolling Thunder" version? Link, 56k Beware! Because the No Country For Old Men/ crowd hasn't been tapped yett.

this thread just got hilarious! lol

Allen850, get to try out the new SG? Has anyone shot this thing yet?

I was thinking about another product today, those laser and/or light mounts for shotguns from Lasermax. They make them for certain Remington and Benelli models, but I don't see Mossberg listed. One on a PG Mossberg Cruiser could be interesting. Anyone know if there's a similar product? Or a mount to use an existing light, maybe laser?

Mesa Tactical makes a barrel clamp that you can attach a short little bit of picatinny rail to.

It should fit any 12 gauge shotgun.

If you can't shoot a 12 gauge without having to use a muzzle break, then gunning is not for you.

Take up Chess or Parcheesi.
