I just got a brand new mossberg 500 yesterday, and took it home and cleaned every nook and cranny on the gun. I took it out today to shoot some clays, and put about 175 rounds through it. On 2 occasions it dropped a shell out of the magazine when i fired the gun with 2 different brands of ammo. It seemed to only do it when i would shoot 2 clays at a time, cycling the gun quickly. Other than that It cycles and shoots great, but i cant figure out why the shell released from the magazine when i shot it? I have tried searching the answer, but i cant really find any information on this particular issue (only double feeding and failing to feed). I would send it to mossberg, but i currently have a 3 week old remington 870 that is on its way back to the factory for repair  .

Thank you

Jake

Then just go shoot it again while you wait for your Remington. It could be an issue with a deformed undersized shellstop but I think it'll work in. You could also be short-stroking. Rack that sucker hard in one back and forth motion. Believe it or not, using different models of pump shotguns can be very different feeling! Go put another 100 through it and see what's up.

An other thing is perhaps the shell stop is under-lubricated and sticking? Make sure both of 'em have a dab of oil. Also may be a break-in and use issue. Try dry-racking the shotgun a few times to get some wear on those parts and, hopefully, less friction.

I actually just re read the article on how to fix the feeding issues in Mossbergs. I can place a shell in the magazine, and wiggle it from side to side and it will not jump past the shell stop. It actually has a great grip on the shell with plenty of room to spare. Since it passed this test does this mean i must be doing something wrong?

AUN is right. You're probably not loading them all the way. That's not a rare problem with a Mossy. It's just a bit of inexperience.

Load a shell into the magazine but only push it til it catches the shell stop. You'll feel it click and think it's loaded properly. Pump it. The shell will pop loose from the shell stop before the elevator lowers to catch it and it'll hit the ground. To fix that, just be sure you push each shell all the way in til at least 1/4" or so inside the mag tube. The elevator won't bite you like a Remington will. Just get it at least the first joint of your thumb in. That gun has a shell stop and a shell interrupter that both catch the rim on a cycle....you're just getting it loaded to the first catch.

I am stumped. I can not get the gun to do it again. I placed one dummy shell in the chamber, one shell fully in to the magazine, and placed one shell "one click" in to the magazine. The result was the shell in the chamber "fired" and was ejected, the shell that was placed in the magazine with "one click" slipped out of the magazine on to the ground, and i was left with an empty shell lifter, and one round still in the magazine. What happened earlier today was, i had just fired a shot, ejected the empty shell, chambered another round and looked down and there was a live round laying on the ground with one less round in my magazine. It seems like it would have happened during the recoil. Everything appears to be adjusted/keeping the shell held in the right place. Heck i may have cycled a live round without knowing i did it (i have never done that, let alone 2 times in 1 day?) I will just have to keep a close eye next time i notice this. Thank you guys for the help.

Your onto it man, it is happening during the recoil of the first shell going off, number 2 that isn't in but 1 click drops out and number 3 feeds back and could go onto the lifter while number 2 is on the ground. With the dummy shells there is no recoil to jar it out, but when you start to slide the pump back and the action bars move the cartridge stops it falls out.

I had problems with a maverick 88 doing this when I first got it (the feeding works just like the 500). The problem wasn't an every time occurrence and went away after a second good strip, clean and lubricate and about 100 shells. The problem layed somewhere between the break in period of the gun and the shooter becoming accustom to the gun.
