I've got a Mossberg 500 security/field shotgun that came with an 18.5" and a 28" barrel. The takedown screw on the 28" barrel has the hole threaded for a sling swivel, but the 18.5" barrel's takedown screw's hole is not threaded. I'd like to put a nice two point sling on it, but Mossberg has made this quite difficult for me to do. I tried removing the takedown screw on the 28" barrel, but that star retainer is giving me trouble, and I don't want to booger up the threads in the process. Every front sling attachment I have seen requires either a threaded hole on the takedown screw, or the removal of the takedown screw. Do I have any other front sling mount options? If not, how can I remove the star retainer without too much trouble? Thanks in advance.

Most of the kits Ive seen come with a new retainer cap and swivel and run about ten bucks. I screwed my star retainer up on removal but the kit came with one. Im not sure maybe someone else will have better advice for you but the mag tube cap is the best sling option I have seen

The sling swivel on my Mossberg 500 attaches to the collar on the barrel that the takedown screw goes through. It does not attach to the screw itself.

There is a difference between the 500 and 590. 500 has a takedown screw, the 590 has a magazine cap.
