I've been needing to get a shotgun, hunting and HD. I've found out that Mossberg now offers the 590 in 20ga, 20" barrel and an 8+1 capacity. Comes with a ghost ring rear sight, drilled and tapped. Would be using rifles slugs for hunting and probably a buckshot for the home.

I haven't heard or seen much except for maybe a couple videos on it. Wondering if anyone on here has handled or used one at the range yet?

590’s are great…20 ga will be fine for Home Defense…hunting my be iffy. Very heavy all things considered, typically one choke (not threaded), may need a plug to make legal (depending on hunting)…

Deer hunting, not a fan of water fowl hunting. State land is shotgun only with very few areas for rifle. Far as I can tell, no capacity limit during deer hunting with pump, lever, or bolt action, just semi-auto had a capacity of 5 rounds.

I would prefer a rifled barrel for a little more range and accuracy with slugs. Might work for 50-75 yards though. I don't think standard slug barrels work with the long magazine tube.

I'm not too concerned about the range. Used rifled slugs in my Grandpa's 500 with a smooth bore and never had an issue, granted that did have a full length barrel and not a security length barrel.

I'd be all about it. The 20ga is no slouch in terms of taking Whitetail deer and home defense duty and a lil less punishing on the shoulder recoil wise for any smaller stature or recoil sensitive men/women. Only thing that would make me a lil sour on it is not being able to find a good selection of shells and paying considerably more for a smaller shell with less availability, (see .410 as well). But the 20 ga is leaps and bounds more available than .410 but definitely not where 12ga is.

I remember 5+ years ago I could find and buy 20ga in just about any load and there was plenty of it, selection, availability, etc and it was cheaper than 12ga but it's all flipped upside down now. I used to buy 100 packs of #8 20ga for $20.

But as far as having a good solid hunting/HD gun that isn't gonna be a high volume shooter I can see where the 20ga still makes sense. It is a lil smaller, lighter and doesn't have a harsh recoil and would love to come across one honestly. I would like a .410 as well but finding shells is a crapshoot and those guns tend to be finicky whereas the 20ga and 12ga seem to be equally reliable.....

Yeah I had just seen that they have the 590 in .410 too. Also agree that ammo selection currently sucks, no idea if it will ever improve given current political climate. https://www.mossberg.com/590-7-shot-50700.html
