Mossberg 590 tactical pump

I picked up a Mossy 590A1 for July 4th and have been loving it. I've done several range sessions with different magnum buckshot, reduced recoil buckshot, and different slugs (with some birdshot thrown in). Gosh I love that gun, it has a Bantam stock which is a tad smaller and an 18.5" barrel (the thing feels really small even with no pistol grip; and shoots like a dream). I'm about to invest in a comp or copstock from Knox because defense loads are pretty vicious in this thing. I love the A1 because the heavier barrel and trigger guard make you feel like you could beat someone to death with it. I haven't had a chance to test it on any clay pigeons but I'm sure I could dispatch some if I pick them up right out of the launcher.

Just my 2 cents here. The 590 is a fine shot thrower. But you mentioned about the Marines carrying it. I carried a Mossberg 500 in Iraq for 7 months. that gun was beat to hell when i got it. It rode in up in the turret of a hummer with me, slept in the dirt with me, went to chow with me, whent to poop with me, was used as a pry bar a few times, was dropped from the tops of hummers into the mud a few times, you name it I did it. That 500 fired a round EVERY time i pulled the trigger! I love the 590 but live by the 500. Just something to think about.

I recommend the VangComp Oversized Safety. It's metal and it makes it much easier to switch the safety on all 590 and 590A1 shotguns. It might be the same one on all the 500-series but I'm not sure. I got mine from Brownells.

so you're basically saying that the 500, despite its crappy plastic parts, is just as reliable and durable as the 590?

good news for me, as i hav ea knoxx sidewinder kit that i'd like to put together and i'd rather not spend too much on a 590.

A little clunky? Yes.

Dead reliable? Absolutely.

I don't like the Moss pumps for hunting or clay games as the forearm rattle drives me nuts.

I do have a 500 home defense set up that I use regularly in 3 gun competitions and it sits next to my bed every night. I trust it 150%.

I don't know where it was, but someone else on here posted that the fore-end rattle can be fixed. I'm sure a gunsmith could do it. The fore-end on my 590 Mariner doesn't rattle.

If it says TACTICAL it MUST be good.

I've owned a 500 before and it was hardy and did the job. I went back to the 870 because it just feels better to me.

I'm sure you'd be happy with it.

These days "tactical" tends to be a term used by manufacturers to describe a particular configuration, usually consisting of (for shotguns): 18" smooth bore barrel, pistol grip with buttstock, and a black/synthetic finish. "Tacti-cool" however, is a totally different thing.

I bought a 590 Special Purpose back in April for a HD shotty. It's my first Mossberg and I really like it. I have a sweet Remington 870 skeet gun and the fit and finish is much nicer then the Mossberg, but I like the way the Mossberg is set up with the slide release and safety positioned so you don't have to change your grip on the gun to manipulate them. The only problem that I've had was with the Federal Tactical buckshot being too long to load 8 rounds and feed properly - but that wasn't the guns fault.

I'm going to say this, not to insult anyone, but to relieve some of my frustration.

I have an 870 I bought at a gun show recently that was $250. It had a silly flashlight/laser attached to it, and a heat shield. I asked the guy "what for?" he says "had 'em laying around" BS, I think. He's strapping all this stuff on shotguns for 18-21 year old kids who saw this kind of thing in the movies and think a laser is neat.

Of course I took all that junk off (the heat shield was interfering with the action) I have the light/laser thing sitting in a drawer in my desk and use it occasionally to tease the dog, that's about all they're good for. A laser on a 18.5" barrel 12gauge? How about a flashlight? Just what I need, a cheap flashlight with 30" of gun behind it.

A home defense shotgun is just that, it sits by your bed and waits...for decades, for it's turn in the spotlight and you hope that it doesn't get used by the grandchildren that you pass it on to someday for the same reason you had it.

Want to shoot clays? it's the wrong gun. Want to hunt with it? again, the wrong gun. your gun safe is a toolbox, you take out the tool to do the job. If you don't have a box end wrench, you may need to use a pair of pliers...but you're likely to round off the bolt or bust your knuckles in the process. Get the right tool, get the job done right. </rant>

BS. Ive shot plenty of trap with 18 inch shotguns, and hunted with them
