Do you think a blued Mossberg 590 would hold up about as well as a parkerized 590 if I took care of it? Basically I would like to know if I could rely on a blued 590 for defense, or if parkerization would be the way to go. I would be using the shotgun for home defense and possible SHTF.

You would most likely be fine with blue though I no longer prefer it. Blue is not a tough finish and I try to buy stainless anymore. But I won't turn down a blued gun either.

well when it comes to a HD/SHTF gun, ide imagine the finish would be the last thing i would be concerned about...

that being said, the receiver on the 590 is aluminum....so rust will not be a problem...

and barrels are easy enough to care for......just wipe it down with an oily rag every now and then and you should be just fine.

The finish will wear off faster that's all. The gun itself will be fine. As mentioned before, keep it wiped down. Aluminum will corrode not rust.

Mine's blued and I don't mind beatin' holy hell outa it while packing it around in the mountains. It so far has held up surprisingly well.

I wouldn't worry too much about blued if one comes your way and parking the steel bits - such as they are - is a small matter.

Thanks for the replies, I just dont see the 590 offered as parkerized on Mossbergs site anymore. Not cool lol.

There's a place in your profile where you can indicate your location, which would be helpful with a question like this.

If you live in one of the miserably humid states in the southeast, a blued shotgun will require more frequent care- so blued is fine but you're going to have to pay a lot closer attention to it than you would a parkerized.

Mainsail; sorry I live in southern Illinois where the summers are quite muggy but the rest of the year is fairly dry. Right now I have a '56 dated Winchester model 12 that is starting to fade "into the white" and some parts such as the magazine tube show surdace rust. I have no idea hoe much the gun was used before I bought it about a year ago, but I think I will be pursuing a parkerized finish for my next pump gun, which I intend to use for home defense and recreational plinking/training.

Im sure my old model 12 would be up to the task, but its not easy to
find cheap replacement parts for it at all. Besides I wouldnt want to wear it out anyway.

Sitting in a bedroom all it's life and coming out for an occasional range trip, why wouldn't bluing hold up if you take care of it? My waterfowl shotguns get dunked in mud and salt water now and then, they live a hard life. And, you don't know muggy until you've been to the gulf coast, though I do NOT live without air conditioning. The blued ones still look okay, though I do prefer plastic and the camo finish on my old Mossy 500. On my blued guns, I paste wax 'em with floor wax. That really seems to help. I strip the oil before and after the season and paste wax 'em, whether I hunt ducks or just doves with 'em. I learned to do that right here on this board, but apparently, it's an old wisdom.

I'll take a decent blueing over Parkerizing almost every time.

Parkerizing is superior in corrosion resistance only when it has Cosmoline or some other heavy grease baked into it, or is kept practically swimming in oil.

Also, being rough in texture, almost like very fine grit sandpaper, it also makes for more friction in the action than any reasonably well polished blued piece.

Hmm that sounds interesting. I will have to look up how to do thay for the blued guns I have now. Thanks for the replies everyone, I feel better about getting a blued Mossberg if I can't find one parked.
